New Carvin P bass, about time?

Agreed. Scott at Yarah Customs designed the shape. I was initially worried that it would cover too much of the body, but I think it turned out great. He does great work ad was really easy to deal with. Small one-man local operation. I'll be getting more work done by him in the future.

In my opinion they are worth the price, since I change them so infrequently. For me there's no better string for fretless. They sing with or without a coated fretboard. And they get really nice bass for such a light string. It took me a minute to adjust to the tension, but after that it was all good.

I agree. I used them for years on my Roscoe LG3005 fretless, and on my fretless 4 string P. I've ordered them up for my Carvin. $89.95 with the TB VIP pricing at Bass Strings Online, as someone so kindly pointed me to.

The build specs are pretty much exact. Alder body, maple neck/fretboard, stock electronics. The one diff I can think of is the SB has stainless jumbo frets and the PBJ has low wide frets. That seems more like a feel diff. The PBJ has stock Carvin strings, the SB has some DR Fatbeams on it. The SB weighs 9.5 lbs and the PBJ weighs 8.4 lbs.

Both are great looking basses. I tried the LB75 and found it to be bright and it lacked the body I was looking for. The SB series appears to have the same sound. In hearing the examples of both bass guitars, I am more drawn to the Pb bass as it has the usually Carvin bright sound but it has the fuller sound with both pickups on. I always loved the back J pickup on its own for soloing, so with getting an active Pb bass, I think will be the best option for me. Thanks for the examples. They have a very similar sound as this guy on youtube so I am confident the examples were hearing are accurate.

Still thinking about the SB5000. The bass whisper video gets me going.

Thanks. At first I struggled with the PB, but over time I've come to enjoy the full P sounds of my PBJ more. At this point, I rarely ever pick up my SB5000. Which for those that know me and know how much of a fan I have been of that bass over the last 3.5 years probably comes as a shock. The PBJ is just rubbing me all kinds of right these days.

Also, I enjoyed my bass more after I did a minor setup on it. I brought the action down a little, adjusted pickup height, put some DR HiBeams on it, took the pickguard off and turned up the output of the active preamp. I also find I like to run the bass/treble on the amp at noon and bump the mids up a little on my GK amps with this bass. I typically run the bass at both volumes full, tone adjusted based on string freshness and treble noon, bass bumped up just a hair. With all of that, I'm enjoying the sounds much more. I'm considering changing the bass out to master volume/blend as well.

Taking my fretless PB5 on the road Friday night to the Stillwater Taproom in Augusta, GA with Joel Meeks and Brian James. Used it in rehearsal with them last night. It's an acoustic trio, Brian on guitar and Joel switching off on guitar / harp / sax, and the fretless really sang with them. I'm usually using it with an electric blues / soul / funk band, so it was nice to see the versatility. Highlight of the show will likely be our acoustic version of Hendrix's Manic Depression lol.
