New Darkglass Compressor: The Hyper Luminal Hybrid Compressor

When I was researching the HL before I bought it, a couple of YouTube videos and some internet reviews.
Interesting- curious if these were pre-release type reviews before the current HL DG Suite options were finalized. Did they give any hints about what kinds of features were meant to be forthcoming? I honestly can’t imagine too much more they could add from a firmware direction. The compressor circuit is an analog VCA, so I don’t think they can really add more types of compression voices digitally. The digital control is all controlling the sidechain (ie the signal that triggers the compressor), and there isn’t much useful sidechain control I could imagine that isn’t already in there (that wouldn’t require extra hardware anyway)

If I have time I will see if I can post what I found in this thread. It is possible it was early reviews, and they may have been speculating.

I thought it was interesting, because like you, as I read that there could be other compressor models added, was wondering just how on earth that would be possible.

Also, I hope I didn’t get my signals crossed when I was looking into the Cab sim pedal they have.

Is it possible to use this like a De esser with the side chain settings?

Hi- I was thinking to answer this before, but maybe not totally qualified on it. In my opinion you’d be better off with a more specialized tool for that job. My understanding of a de-esser sidechain is that it uses an HPF and actually boosts/emphasizes the “ess” frequencies you wish to cut into the sidechain. This makes it so the compressor only clamps down when those particular frequencies are abundant. The Hyper Luminal doesn’t offer any sort of EQ boost of chosen frequencies in the sidechain, so I think the triggering wouldn’t be focused enough for that function (I also can’t remember how high you can set the HPF frequency). I could be wrong though as I wouldn’t have thought to use a pedal for that application (it’s usually a specialized part of a PA system or an extra rackmount module).

I have connected my HL via USB and downloaded the most recent DG Suite software for Windows. The HL shows connected in the Suite. When I manually try to do a firmware update, I get the following error:

Cables are all good, and I do have internet access. I use a VPN, so I disabled that so the request doesn't run through VPN - a frequent source of problems for other software. Same error.

I also uninstalled both the drivers and the Suite, and reinstalled them. Same error.

I have the most recent DG USB drivers installed and as mentioned, the current Suite software. I have searched the thread and didn't see this anywhere. Has anyone else run into this?

Is there a location from which to download the firmware update file? I did a site search on darkglass.com and it didn't turn up anything, and there's nothing in the menu system that points to the firmware updates.

I have submitted a support request from mypedal.darkglass.com and will share info when DG gets back to me. Hopefully @Darkglass will also see this soon.

Have you tried the other button first even though you know it hasn't been updated before?

I ask as you didn't mention it, it is there and that's what the red box says??

Hey Phat, thanks for replying. I'm not sure what you mean by the "other button" .. Update from file? I don't have the file to update from, so I'm clicking the "Check firmware update" button.
OK...

I thought perhaps you went straight to Update Firmware and perhaps the system required a check before moving to that update button. Sounds like you are good, except the DG Suite is having an issue and a ticket will get you taken care of soon.

Thanks for letting us know what you find out!

I've uninstalled the 4.1.1 Windows Suite, and reinstalled the legacy Suite just to see if that would do the firmware update. It still won't update, but I'm getting a different message that there is an invalid response from the update server, and to try again later. Maybe that server is down today, or not working correctly, and this will clear up when the server is available.

I've cross-posted the original post on the big Darkglass Club thread.

This morning, I connected the HL and started the Suite. There was no connection error, and the Suite reported that my firmware is up to date at version 1.2. Apparently it was a server problem this weekend on Darkglass' end.

I've been having some issues with mine. It was awesome for the first month or so of ownership, but since then, a couple of times it's made this nasty loud popping sound and the signal cuts out, and trying to bypass the effect doesn't help. I hooked it up yesterday to see how it got along with the shiftline olympic I brought, and I was getting occasional cracking noises when adjusting the knobs and there was this subtle high pitched sound that sounds like I was hearing the power supply. I'm scared something in the power section of the pedal isn't right. I've been powering it with a one spot daisy chain, I hope that's not an issue. Shiftline was powered with it's own separate power supply in yesterdays test. I love the HL and really want it to work, Bus mode adds this beautiful sweetening and evening of the sound that still keeps my dynamics.

I just emailed support about mine also. It's been randomly cutting out and making popping noises as it does also. I'll let you know what I find out.
