New Dilemma

At least he didnt have to drive the whole way.

I had a deal like this once. I was in the band, had done several shows. Had to drive about an hour and a half each way to practice.

We had this cool gig coming up opening for a major act at the big event of the year at a rafting place, after which we were going to disband because of the guitar players work schedule.

I was really looking forward to that show because it was gonna be in front of a wild crowd of hell-raisin rafters-pro sound and lights-all that.

The week before the show, I get a call, "We're going to use an old bass player that the guitar player is really tight with, because he wants to finish out with with him because of their long history."

:spit:

I might not know the whole story but from what I have read, I call that pure BS. They effed you.

How would we know any different? Any thread that we read here is about you being angry about being 58, or angry that your original band isn't working, or angry that you have to join a cover band, or angry that you were let go from a cover band you wanted to quit, or whatever it is that pissed you off for the day.

Kind of ticks me off that you would make a sweeping generalization about me. Your wrong, for example he is a positive reponse from me for the Band News thread;

That is simply awesome.

It's great to see local folks get recognition like that.

It's really a struggle for most of us locals to get any kind of press.

And there are a lot more, you just want to see the negative , so thats all you will see.

First of all we jammed for about an hour after the 3 songs, their idea, not mine. Plus their was a Q&A session.

Are you in high school?

@blue - No. I'm 55 years old. I've been playing bass since I was 14. Did it as a full-time professional for five of them. So I'd like to think I'm bringing something more to the conversation than just talking off the top of my head. (FWIW, age and experience may not make you wise, but they do give you some perspective. And sometimes a better sense of humor. )

Note: nobody was knocking you. It was a critique of the people auditioning you. Cover bands are usually more difficult gigs because you need to be able to hold down a greater variety of styles and techniques than you would playing for an all original band. With that you'd only need to be able to play one band's style and type of music.

So my point was they'd need more than three songs to adequately assess a bassist's ability to handle the range of music a good cover band ...er...covers. That's all.

The exception would be a tribute act that only covered one band's music.

Oh well. Feelings seem to be running high so I'm gonna bow out of this conversation.

Best wishes and better luck with your next band.

I wasn't trying to offend, I was simply making an observation based on what I saw. I understand being frustrated in a band situation, I am all the time, but if you want to play and make money, sometimes you just gotta make it all sunshine and rainbows.

You put yourself in a situation, decided you weren't happy, got let go before you could quit, and then got upset about that too.
I don't think that I made a "sweeping generalization". I made an observation made on the facts you presented.

The same thing happened to me not long ago. Band gave me the gig, then took the gig away and gave it back to their previous bass player, after I had already wasted time learning songs and attending an audition and rehearsal. Probably because he was young and I'm in my early 50's.

But that email you received was nicer than the one I received.

It hurts for a while, then you move on. Just move on and don't waste another day thinking about it, is my advice. Easier said than done, I know.

It seems like you crave attention, posting all these threads.

Ok, that was below the belt, but so is something doesn't smell right.

Hardly Blue, I would expect a cover-band audition to involve quite a bit more than 3 songs and an open jam for an hour.. more like 10 songs in an audition or more likely a full 3 hour gig. If you choose to take offense at that, that's your choice man. It's no a dig on you but rather the band you were working with.. and it's what you presented to this public forum.

I understand your point and while I don't have an argument your theory is not bullet proof.

I just don't believe there is as much diversity in the styles of music performed by most cover bands.

My audition for my originals band was much more challenging than the cover band and these guys were better than most cover bands I have heard over the past few years and I have subbed for a few cover bands.

No, you are wrong like most people that respond to my threads.

I am not some socially deprived loser seeking attention. I just happen to be fascinated by band management issues.

I think I generate a lot of attention, I don't seek it. I think that's where you might be confused.

I think the two 3 hour rehearsals were with his original band. Hence leaving him too tired to want to play with the new cover band.
(I may be wrong but that is how i read it.)

Your right or you might be right. The originals band has rehearsals on Sat & Sundays and the cover band on Monday & Wednesdays.

So yeah, I was thinking how am I going to be able to keep up a schedule like that.

What I have drawn from most of you is, it's ok to offer a deal and then take it back.

Doesn't suprise me.

blue
How about offering your services and then taking that offer back?

Sorry, blue, but acting butthurt about the band changing their mind whilst openly admitting that you were about to do exactly the same to them is not only illogical, it's also hypocritical. And openly stating that you're not surprised by what you misinterpret as an unprofessional outlook by most of us here is pretty insulting to the general TB membership, as is your "I'm right and almost everyone else is wrong" schtick that most folks outgrow before they hit their twenties. In fact, I know plenty of musicians in their twenties with way more maturity than that. I think some of your issues aren't anything to do with being too old and more to do with never having really grown up. Nothing too wrong with that in some ways - I'm dreading the day when I have to act like a grown up. :D

You got away without having to honour a commitment you'd made, but wished you hadn't made. The band got their bassist slot filled. It sounds like nobody's burned any bridges. So, there's absolutely no sensible reason for anyone to keep whining about this situation. Please, quit doing that before you lose what remains of your credibility on this forum. Sorry to be so blunt, but it's pathetic to hear someone your age complaining like this. Folks our age are supposed to set an example for all those high-schoolers you keep taking a dig at.

It would be great for you to stop making yourself miserable about your music and enjoy the fact that you're still doing it after all this time. I'm grateful every day that I'm lucky enough to do that and get a lot of pleasure out of it. If music's making you this unhappy, why carry on at all?

I'm curious - if the band had kept you, and you didn't despise the material, how would your originals band have felt about trying to book a show and all of a sudden finding out you were busy with another band 5-6 weekend days a month? Or did you tell them upfront that you weren't happy with the amount of dates they were getting and were looking for something else?

Moderator Note: Since these threads are distinctly related to the same band situation, they have been merged. I suggest that new threads on the same topic are not necessary.

On a personal note, I heartily agree with Bassybill's post above.

It would have been a trian wrecK, it was a part of this mess I didn't really think through.

I am impulsive and I have to live with, I guess.

Yes , I got off easy and it was a releif, lets leave it at that.

No, never ever had much interest in being a grown up, whatever that is.

If I change the way I see things, nobody will be interested in my threads, right now I generate a lot of activity and everyone learns something from it. Even if it's an exersize in how not to be stupid.

ROFL! Fair enough, man, good answer.

I meant what I said about enjoying your music. :)

Really? You must not read his posts very much. I envision that he'll quit the pop/original band for the cover band, and two weeks later we'll get a discussion about how he doesn't like playing the music in the cover band, he made a mistake, and he's 58 so he can't wait around any longer. Should he quit and look for something he likes (maybe the pop band will take him back) or slog through the covers, being unhappy so he can play. Then he'll post in another couple weeks that he has decided to quit the cover band and is auditioning for a band, and he's afraid that his age (he's 58 you know) will be a problem.

I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong. He never quit the orignals band, and it was 0 weeks, not 2, before he decided he didn't like playing the cover music. My apologies.

When I first joined, I'll admit I didn't like BlueWines Posts... But he's grown on me, he keeps the forums enetertaining, post's some good replies (We all post bad replies as we'll)

To me it seems like he has a huge passion for music. Like an overwhelming passion for music, this leads him to probably not think about much else. He post's alot of threads, but not all of them are about himself. Seems to me he's just bored and is trying to keep active threads going so he can discuss his fav topic.. Bass, same as the reason i log on these boards far more often than I should :P
