New DR neon strings

Photoon2010-10-11at10372.jpg

pictures dont really capture how cool they look in person. I really am impressed on how they sound.
Mine have some lil chips where there isnt color. Is anyone elses like that?

how would you compare thier tone to Hi-Beams or Lo-Riders? duller or brighter?

Didn't think neon green would go with a sunburst finish, but it looks awesome. Thats a pretty cool styled bass with a telecaster-like bridge and pickguard, what is it?

They aren't exactly duller, to me it sounds like a new set without the brightness of a brand new set. But I haven't tried a set of lo-riders to compare.

It's an Ibanez Atk, been my go-to bass for a while, lots of people just consider them music man clones but they are really versatile.

A 6-er set would also be nice.

+1.

I just got a couple sets in the mail yesterday (yellow5 and green 4). Played the 5 last night, and I must say I'm impressed. Nice feel, excellent tone, but definitely different than regular nickels, and different even than the original coated strings. New strings typically always sound good, so that's probably part of it, but some folks in the crowd noticed the color (no one ever comments on the tone!). I like 'em.

Chrisk-K....> From my results with their guitar strings I think the 40 gauge string would be weak sounding thru the pups due to not enough metal for the pups to read thru the coating. While the wound strings sounded ok they do have noticeble signal drop off compared to uncoated wound guitar strings. When you get to the even thinner unwound strings the signal drop off becomes problematic and really bad by the time you get to the guitar B string. While there is a minor drop off in signal strength to the pups with the bass strings its not enough to be a problem but with the guitar strings even the 42 is weak in my try with them. You lose significant amount of drive with overdrive in my try. As result of trying the guitar strings Id be leery of gauges below 45 for the neons. I really wanted to be able to like the guitar version as much as the bass version, but that just wasnt going to happen due to what I can only assume is the coating blocking to much interaction with the pups for thinner strings likke guitar uses, esp when you get to unwound strings. I know the diff between 45 and 40 isnt concidered a lot, but the diff between 45 bass and 42 guitar was significant in my try with the bass and guitar sets I bought. Just a caution from experience for you. I do seriously hope that DR comes upm with a fix for this as Id like to be able to really like the guitar neons as well.

Darkstorm - the coating does not appear to be magnetically reactive. It should be just fine, like covering your pickups with plastic or wood covers is just fine ;)

Then why does the level of sound from pups drop so much? Its especially noticed on the unwound guitar strings. Compared to rotosound pinks and ghs boomers the sound level of the neons is like lowering the guitar volume control by at least half. This is course changes the drive for overdrives and distortions by a very notcieable amount. As though one has lowered the overdrive gain/overdrive amount by nearly half. Ay first I thought maybe it was something caused by adjusting to the strings feel. But nope, even my procesors tuner had trouble reading any notes for the guitar B & E string. Once I took the neons off and replaced them with uncoated strings, the volume drop disappeared completely.

With the bass strings there is a very minor drop off of volume compared to rotosound swing66 and ghs boomer 45's. But its vvery minor, like rolling basses volume down 1. I dont mind that given the excellent tone they give and output still allows for all but that last little bit of over the edge saturated overdrive. I normally run basses volume on 8-9 a little less if wanting cleaner tone. With the guitars there was not getting saturated overdive just medium grade but nice chunky overdrive. You do realize I'm making no adjustments to the processor for either bass or guitar.

Unless I somehow got a bad set, the guitar strings create an undeniable easilly heard drop in strings level out the guitars output jack. Which I think I reasonably think is a result of the coating on the strings.

Whats even more telling is that with the guitar. I have two with identical pups etc. The one I put the neon greens had ghs boomers9's on it. The other guitar has rotosound 9's on it. If I plug the neon strung guitar in then then one with uncoated strings on it in. The volume drop affect to overdrive saturation is very noticeable. That drom disapeared completely once I took the neons off and repalced with roto 9 pinks. I then out of idle curiostity reversed which guitar had the neons on it. I had bought two paks of the things. Same exact results.

Ive put the other set of neon greens on my other bass cause theyre sound does satisfy and doesnt interfere with drive levels in any significant way to me. But the thinner strings for guitar just dont.

What else would it be other then the coating? Boomers are nickel, rotosounds are stainless steel. So its not what metal the DR's have under the coating as whats causeing the diff. And Ive tried noncoated DR strings in the past and they dont have this volume drop to them either.

Id absolutely love to get another set of the guitar neons and find they dont have this oddity to them. Thatd Id somehow just gotten a fluke pair of them. And I probably will try them again at some point when I got an extra $13 to blow. Cause I would like to be useing them on guitar with the same satisfaction theyre giving on bass. I was hoping that when I put on the 2nd set on the other guitar the problem would be gone. Which would have told me Id just gotten a fluke set for the first one. And Id of been ordering another set or two of the guitar ones allready. Lol.

Darkstorm - there is some high frequency rolloff from these; they're definitely "duller" sounding than the Elixirs I use on guitar, and it's likely I will be going back to Elixirs for that reason. However, no volume drop for me, and I have a Budda Superdrive, which is very touch- and output-sensitive.

Note: they still look awesome in less-than-great lighting.
I had an old set of DR Black Beauties on this. Maybe it's just the allure of new strings, but they seem to be a little less floppy.
Output/frequencies are about identical to when I but the BBs on a while ago, though there may be some added top end (then again, this is the first new set of strings on this bass in at least 6 years), and there appears to be a slight shift in the mids response.
