New EB Cobalt Strings

Ok, I have a question for slinky users. I saw earlier in the thread Tunaman said he hated the hybrids. Once the produced in mass there will be cobalt hybrids, according to the web site. Anyone else have a yes or no on their hybrid strings because I'm curios if the new cobalt alloy will make a difference in them. They have made a difference in the standard strings. Any users out there? BTW have strung my Am standard jazz with the heavier gauged 50-105 and they are really starting to grow on me compared to the 45-100's. I like the growl I get better from these gauges. Anyhow, yea's or nay's for hybrids?

FWIW - There are 5 different 4 string sets and they are all available, including hybrids.

Super, Hybrid, and Regular are most popular so far from what I am seeing.

Extra Slinky: .040 .060 .070 .095
Super Slinky: .045 .065 .080 .100
Hybrid Slinky: .045 .065 .085 .105
Regular Slinky: .050 .070 .085 .105
Power Slinky: .055 .075 .090 .110

Wait...isn't 'hybrid' just the name they give to their 45-105 set? It has nothing to do with the string construction.

That's good to know, I just assumed like other companies they were a cross between flats and rounds. If its name only that's the gauge I'd prefer. Thanks for clearing that up. The Cobalts are my first experience with EB's. Just excuse my ignorance and thanks again.
Chalk up another one for TB, a great resource for information, minus the somewhat regular Fender/brand rants. :-)

If I'm not mistaken, they call it hybrid because its a bottom heavy top light set.
Meaning the bottom two strings is heavy, 105 & 85, whilst the top strings are light 65 & 45

I think it originated from their guitar strings set, where some guitarists liked a bottom heavy top light set of strings.

You guys are right. Hybrid does not refer to string materials - they are hybrid from a gauge perspective. I use regular hybrid slinkys on my Ray, EB group III flats on my P. I'm not a big fan of the coated strings, I don't like steel strings, but would be willing to give the cobalts a try, although I'm not sure if they would be better suited for my Ray or P.

I want to hear more feedback from you guys before I take the plunge.

I have been using DR Low Rider Nickels but I have recently swapped to Slinky's as I just could not justify the price any longer and I seem to be getting weaker in my old age. The Low Riders are stiffer than normal strings.

I just ordered 6 sets of Slinky's. Also in the switch to Slinkys I have went from medium Low Riders to Extra Slinky on the Slinkys and moved from primarily playing Stingray and P Basses to a Jazz Bass with smaller neck. Geuss I'm turning into a wuss. :D

I'm certainly curious how the Cobalt's are and will probably take the plunge at some point.

Interesting that you switched from DR's because of the price, yet Cobalts cost more than DR's!

Might as well get DR Sunbeams if you want a low tension string. They cost less than Cobalts, but more than Slinky's...BUT..you'll wear out 3 sets of Slinky's before you wear out a set of DR's.

Not thrilled about the strings, but those basses are killer! He has Music Mans that that Johnny Lunchpail can't get.

Well I was poking around and saw Jason has the new Ernie Ball Cobalt strings up for pre-order for delivery in the last part of February!

I think these are definitely worth a shot and they are priced pretty good...and don't forget to register as a TB user on his site to get even better pricing....VIP has its benefits :)

I was getting a really good deal on the DR's. A good friend of mine is a dealer. I'm sure he sells Slinkys/Cobalts too so I'm sure I can get them cheaper as well but I have to drive into Atlanta and I have been a little low on funds lately. Not buying any Cobalts at this time but interested.

So, I recently tried a set of cobalts out I got the 100-45 set. Played it last night and they sound very bright and poppy even after stretching them out a good deal. tonight I started working on my soloing for a song, and the core of the D and G strings both broke when I used my whammy bar. I was highly disappointed with this seeing as how its never happened with either the SIT strings I had on it before nor the GHS Bass Boomers that I regularly use. Maybe I got a bad set, or perhaps its a problem with the first batch but I know that they definitely shouldn't have broken on day 2 with bending that all of my other strings have been able to handle.
