Double Bass New EDB-2 and EDM-1 from Headway For Trial

Just picked up a EDB-2 from Gary Ritter Strings it is as good as Gary promised. I played it saturday with my 1940 Juzek , Realist pickup, Genz Benz Shuttle 9.2 head and Shuttle 1x12" Neo cab.
It sounded like my bass only louder finally! I ran the pre directly into the return section of my amp and mounted the unit on a mic stand.

Correct, by by-passing the preamp I wanted to hear the true sound of the Headway EDB-2. Now I can see why some bassist prefer a powered monitor and EDB-2. My next move is to test my bass with the EDB-2 and 3-4 powered monitors at Guitar Center to continue downsizing my rig.

I've had great with the QSC K8, although if I were doing it again I'd get the K10 because it has better low end response. My last experience at Guitar Center, would have been funny, if it hadn't been so ridiculous. I got
a new salesman who simply didn't have any expertise with different brands of powered speakers. I was trying to look at the new Mackie DLM 12's, but he didn't have a clue what the features of those new units were, nor any of the reputable major brands.
He kept trying to sell me anything they had in the store, when he was obviously clueless about different product lines, and what their features are. I truly hope you have a better experience. Our Guitar Centers, are looking very tired these days. Just an
observation on my part, I have purchased other products from them where the staff knew their product lines.

This is a very salient point, because the K8's really don't go low enough to be used as standalone speakers, unless the venue is small, and the volume levels are moderate. Where it really shines, is as a back line speaker
when you're sending a line from the EDB 2 out to the house system. In that scenario, the low end is actually coming from the mains, and the clarity resides right at your ears on stage. Unfortunately, my EDB-2 met up with
a microphone cord (from the venue) that wedged itself into the EDB-2's balanced out, and will not come out. Until, we can source the part for the internal connector, I'm SOL. I miss my EDB-2. So let's be careful out there.

Fortunately the Guitar Center across the street here in Detroit has some of the best sound folks in the country and know me on a first name basis. They won't let me buy expensive gear that they know there are less expensive alternatives and that in itself is a rarity for sales folks (I am one, lol). I'm waiting on my Shen SB100 from Gary Ritter ,then I'll take my entire rig and bass across the street. Question,what frequency response works best?

Well, it's the best option sonically, but it weighs 41 lbs, The K10 is lighter, but only goes to 56 Hz on the bottom end. So, as often is the case it's a trade off.
A better option might be the Mackie DLM 12. which is significantly lighter, with built in EQ and effects.

Bass response on the EDB-2 is dependent on where the range switch is set. Think of it as a three position low cut filter. When the switch is on the "bass" setting the low end is 45hz, the "guitar" setting raises the low end to 80 hz, while the "violin setting" (quite extreme for bass) raises the low end to 120 hz. Hope this helps.

Sent an email to Headway. The explanation of the two frequencies listed is that they measured the bass response at two points. At 45hz and 120hz. The reason they listed the two frequencies is to show that there is a slope over to 120hz so that when you switch the HPF to "guitar" you have removed 80hz and below but the bass control still has the ability to boost/cut at 120hz.

Sorry, a little confused. 'Removed 80hz and below', do they/you mean 'nothing below 80hz is getting thru' or it has been cut (perhaps by 12db or whatever). I just know from experience that sometimes in very boomy settings I have moved the setting to 'guitar' and gotten rid of the boominess. Maybe that's all that matters.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had problems with the EBD-2? I am just about to get my third replacement unit sent out as the gain controls seem to break. It's well looked after and sits on a mic stand so it can't be dropped. I think I have been unlucky enough to keep getting one of the first batch of units that had some faults. I'm glad I live in the UK as headway have been good at sending out replacement units quickly.
