Double Bass New EDB-2 and EDM-1 from Headway For Trial

In general, I'm very happy with the EBD-2. Two friends in town have bought them after trying mine and are also very happy.

Something happened to the direct out on mine, though, and I'm hoping I can find someone in the states to fix it so I don't have to send it to the UK. Does anyone know if they have any authorized U.S. repair people? I'm getting a distorted tone out of the direct out. I had chalked it up to a beginner sound man when it first happened, but then it happened again with sound men I trust.

I've just been running the line out into the line in or effects return of my amp, with great results.

After all of the experimenting with speakers, amps ,preamps,powered monitors,microphones, mixing boards and the like , here is what makes the most sense, least hassle,most direct signal chain and hopefully most reliable set up.

Acoustic Image Ten2 S4 plus

Compact,every feature known to mankind,independent EQ, great sound.
While the Headway EDB-2 was great for the Realist, there was no independent EQ for the Troll and required another power source.
While mixing board and powered monitor was good ,too many cables,connections and power sources.
I considered the Flex Preamp but then again more cords ,connections and signal chain devices.

There is only one dealer her in St. Louis that would have the AI Ten 2 Series 4+ or the Flex Pre Amp, and frankly they are not a customer friendly store at all.
I agree with you, that the less stuff you have to deal with the better. Since I can't demo the new EQ voicing on the Flex or Ten2 Flex Plus, without paying for
shipping, return shipping, and taxes if I decide to return it. I'm waiting until I can find a player locally that's purchased one to evaluate it with my bass, and pickup.
The one feature that I really find useful is having the pre amp "on a stick" so I can set my EQ without juggling the bass, and fine tune it during the first two tunes.

I seriously considered the Flex but got nervous about cabling malfunctions.
In my world anything that can go wrong usually does, lol!
I spoke with Rick Jones and thanked him for his continual pursuit of tone.
It also helps that he plays as well.
I don't know what you're looking for but for Troll and Realist enthusiasts I don't know anything simpler.
I'd try Golihur .

+1 I'm the king of "now where did I put that cord"? I carry spares, and on many occasions, I forget to remember them. o_O
I had such good luck with the Ehrlund EAP and Pre Amp, that I don't really need to look further. I meet Rick Jones at the ISB Convention
last summer, he's truly a wonderful guy. I've made lots of purchases from Mark and Bob Golihur, and find them just great to
do business with. I've even got a Flex Pre Amp on my "wish list" at Golihur. So eventually, I'll get around to it. Since I have a pair
of Walter Woods amplifiers (no brag here, I bought one long ago, and one used), there's no real hurry. ;)

I just picked up the EDB-2 for doubling purposes. The main feature I'd been looking for was a 2 channel box that I could bypass the EQ for EB. I'd have considered a Radial product but the tone controls are global for both channels. There is a lot to digest in the manual but I've already enjoyed the tone I'm getting for both the Eminence and my Shen this afternoon. I stumbled across this box at my local Long & McQuade after bowering Baggs Para DI last night.

My main doubling question is in the initial set up. I'm thinking that I would leave it out of the chain and get a stage volume with my Aguilar rig using electric. From there put the EDB-2 back in the chain and match the volume for EB using EBD-2 gain and master. Then I'd set my double bass for the stage volume/room/tone etc.

I'd appreciate any thoughts from the experienced users.

Well, you could certainly do it that way, but since I usually run the EDB-2 into a powered speaker, when I double, it acts as the pre amp for both instruments. Channel 1 is for Double bass running the EQ
from the EDB-2. Channel to is for EB, using the EQ from my Lakland 55-94, in combination with the EDB-2's gain control. The EDB-2 has a pretty hefty gain staging, so I'd think it would be better to just
connect it to the Aguilar and see what the volume issues are. It's possible that you'll may need to run it into the effects loop rather than the front end of the amplifier.

Thanks Ric. I'll play with different set ups. Yes, getting used to the gain stages is a bit of a curve. Aguilar seems to be able to take a beating compared to other amps I've used. One thought I had was that a mute switch for each channel would be handy. I can turn off my electric easily enough at the bass but can't do the same with the DB.

I am curious if anyone has ever tried a Grace M101 preamp. Chris said in the article that we look for a Preamp which adds as little color as possible to the sound or (option 2) adds a color of sound that sounds good to our ear. The Grace is suppose to be pretty clear and invisible. They are not cheap but what is? Just wondering.

Well, I couldn't be happier with mine. I use it as my main pre amp for DB all the time. The EDB-2 gives me such EQ Flexibility, that it's very easy to dial in a finely tuned Double Bass sound. The design modifications that
were added to the EDB-2 significantly upgraded what was already an excellent box.
