Double Bass New EDB-2 and EDM-1 from Headway For Trial

Both were sent back to Gordon when no one stepped forward to say they were interested.
Just a note to say I am absolutely loving my EDB-2 I got from String emporium a month or so ago.
I'm mainly using it into the effects return of my EA doubler. I've gotten good results that way an also doing the same into an early '90s Polytone.
As reported elsewhere, the 18v phantom power works just fine with the dpa mic.
I haven't even used the notch filter section yet.
BTW, the battery life for me was about 3 weeks of steady gigging. The option to use it without the adaptor proved useful when outlets weren't available.

Okay, my EDB-2 arrived today, I can't wait to start using it! Has anyone tried using it with an additional preamp? Specifically, has anyone used a preamp for the pickup signal, like a PZ-Pre and sent that to the EDBs' 1/4 input, using the EDB-2 as an EQ for mic and as a blender?

Received my EDB-2 and it is amazing, transparent, diverse and functional - this along with my brand new Demeter Minnie 800D (and soon to arrive Big E 4x5) will be my new sound headed by the Troll ribbon mic and my KK Bassmaster pickup. Through 2 aguilar GS 112's both upright and electric are an uncolored sound. Could not be happier. Great job by Headway (Gordon at NOVA) and Gary Ritter Strings. Thanks to all the info from this thread as well. When I get my cabinet in a week or two I will post some vids.
Thanks to a 'heads-up' from a fellow TB'r I recently purchased a Genz Benz Contour 500 (at a fabulous price) to use on a BG gig I have.
Turns out I am also using my Eminence 5 which I recently put a Lifeline PU on. The lifeline is a big improvement IMHO and the EDB-2 really allows me to tweak the best sound out of it.
The drummer told me last week I was getting an awesome sound - totally unsolicited compliment.

Just thought I would comment on the EDM-1, since nobody else has.
I am currently playing an old German ply with a realist. I had given up on preamps for awhile as I didn't like the sound of any of the usual suspects at the time. (Fishman, L.R. Baggs, Headway EDB-1, etc) My problems are probably compounded by the fact that I don't have a stellar sounding instrument, being ply and all. But it does have a unique tone that seems to cut through in most situations.
The best of those pre's mentioned above for me was the headway EDB-1, but I had (as others had mentioned) problems with distortion caused by the high output of the realist. Instead of trying to mod the product I gave up and settled with one of FDecks boxes to cut the low end nonsense.
BUT now... I just finished giving the new headway pre's (EDB-2, EDM-1) a comparison and I thought both were an improvement on the original. I choose the EDM-1 over the EDB-2 as the extra eq options and notch were of no use to my setup (I always dial out presence anyways and I never have problems with feedback, even at really loud volume), I only run single channel and I thought to my ears that I liked the tone just a little better.
Both boxes are great products and if you have a simple one channel set-up, the EDM-1 might be all you need. I have played 3 shows in different rooms (rooms that I have played before the headway was in the signal chain) since grabbing this little unit and each one was a substantial improvement of my live sound.

You are correct. There is only ONE set of tone controls WHICH CAN BE SWITCH SELECTED TO AFFECT CHANNEL ONE, CHANNEL TWO OR BOTH.
The notch filter can be separate selected for either channel 1, 2 (but not both).
If both your pickups need a lot of EQ this might not work for you. If you only need a little EQ on ONE of your pickups you might get by with doing that on your amp and then counteracting that for the other pu with the EDB-2. Not ideal certainly but it works for me.
I'm sure this was a design compromise to keep the box small enough and within its price point. I think John Littler (the 'Head' of Headway) said something to the effect that they had already crammed 10 pounds of groceries into a 5 pound sack.
I've used both the EDB-1 and now the EDB-2 and find that they both are great sounding pre amps. Like you, I initially thought that having only one EQ section would be problematic, but over the course of that last 3 years, I haven't found that to be a problem.
I've used the EDB-2 with the Ehrlund EAP Pickup and a DPA 4099B running the blended signal into a QSC K8 and found it to be a very transparent and full range system, with good headroom and great tone shaping.
Personally, I can't see the advantage of running two different piezo's, but that's just my experience.
One of it's features I like best is that you can vary the input impedance between 1 meg ohm and 5 meg ohm's

Well, compared to the other three blender pre amps I've considered the EDB-2 is about half the price. AI's Flex is a full 2 channel blender/pre amp and if you really want two entirely discreet channels it does that. There's also the Acoustic Box Live which has different EQ's on it's two channels, and runs from AC. So you can take a look at those, to see if the feature set of one of them is what you're looking for. If you feel the EDB-2 is out of your price range, you could possibly try and find the older Raven Labs blender used. It didn't have as many "bells and whistles" but it did have 2 full channels.

Ideally that Accoustic Image Flex unit looks like it would be excellent, but for me the price is just getting too high.
