Double Bass New EDB-2 and EDM-1 from Headway For Trial

Anyway, i read throught the whole thread (in the posts written by you) but i can't find any direct comparison between the old and the newer unit regarding the only issue of noise floor.

I don't care if "on the paper" they say that the specs are so and so.....
I'm interested is someone has compared by ear (and better: by recording) the effective lower noise floor, in a controlled test.


I use the EDB-1 (mainly for violin), and if there's one single thing i'd like better it would be "less intrinsec noise". All other factor are not relevant to me........

Well, since your using a Violin, it's probably best to find an EDB-2 and compare it to your EDB-1 yourself. With a Double Bass it is quieter, but the EQ would be quite different for a Violin, so I can't speak for to that.

Pardon me for not scouring the whole thread. Is the EDB-2 still making the rounds for trial? I'm going to be flying a lot in 2014 and I'd love to try out a blender that I can carry-on easily.

I did a gig where the house provided an SVT Pro with a 4x10 cabinet. Using the EDB-2 in front of the Ampeg's Pre Amp gave me the EQ that you really need with that large of a cabinet. If I were touring, this wound be my go to box.

If you take the trouble to scroll and read through several posts there is an excellent review of the EDB-2 PLUS SEVERAL DETAILED REPLIES FROM JOHN LITTLER (The 'head' of Headway who designed the EDB-2).

Looking into this preamp, but at the moment have no amp. I have a full circle and will probably get a mic as well (looking into the troll). Can I use this with simply a powered speaker, or is an amp necessary?? Does anyone have experience with the first generation of this with a similar setup?

Pete,
That's the combination most players use the EDB-2 with. It plays well both either the QSC K8 or K10 and a variety of other powered speakers. I had a EDB-1 and liked it, but I love the EDB-2
from using both models, I really prefer the newer version, because the redesign gave it a host of very useful new features. IMHO it's worth the extra cash for the new model.

FYI my EDB-2 got back ordered as apparently (per Gary Ritter and Gordon Roberts at NOVA) all but about 10 were built with a less than spec'd component causing failure. Suffice it to say this was not a great situation for Headway with NAMM arriving soon. The Korean company assembling them apparently swapped a component with a not-so-stellar imitation thus causing failure. The good news is that Gordon assurred me, I will be blown away with the sound and if not there is something else wrong in my signal chain! I found Gordon to be extremely helpful and genuine. Looking forward to getting the new gear. I did receive my Minnie Demeter yesterday and was blown away with its perfectly transparent sound (love the controls - virtually none). This was using a ART tube pre and my two Aguliars GS-112s.

I'm also waiting for one on backorder. The story I heard was that they would be back in stock sometime this week. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be that soon.
