Is this different than how people use the Boss DD-6 for freezes? I think Boss also had a pedal that did something similar, maybe the Super Feedbacker?
I'm not sure what it technically does, but what the Feedbacker sounds like is taking a harmonic of the note you play and oscillates it. So it's not a representation of the actual note/chord you play. I'm not positive about the DD-6, but it's likely a standard sample and hold sort of looping. Most people use a delay in that sort of fashion of the Freeze by setting the feedback to 100% for infinite repeats. The problem with that or any other looper is you have to stomp it to start recording, stomp it to stop recording so you can play over it, and do that process again and again every time you want to hold a phrase. You also often get delay repeats in there if your timing isn't perfect. I think these hold pedals loop at a very short rate in order to avoid repeats. There are other methods like putting your delay in a parallel chain or blender and use a voume pedal to fade the delay in and out, but momentary holds are a much more economical (both in motion and money) way to do it.
