I'm looking for a tighter, deeper tone in my warwick corvette standard. I'm definately going with an aguilar preamp, but do I need to replace the pickups to make the preamp completely useful? Will replacing the pickups make a bigger difference?

The preamp swap will make a more pronounced change, esp. going from an MEC to an Aguilar. I'd suggest doing that first and seeing where you stand - no need to swap pups if the new pre does the trick. Which one are you thinking of going with?

Solid choice. Pop that in first, play it for a while and see how you feel then. My Spector has an OBP-3, so IME going from an MEC (bright, shiny) to an Aguilar (thick, organic) should be a pretty big change.

How does the Aguilar preamp tone compare to the Bart NTBT preamp? I'm looking at putting Model J's in my Corvette, but very undecided on the preamp.

I like Bart pups, but have never tried either Ag or Bart preamps. I've done a bunch of reserach, and have ended up more unsure as when I started. I want to keep the natural growl of the Corvette, but having a deeper tone would be nice.

I'm going to throw an aggie preamp in it first, then if I don't love the sound, I'll swap the pups for something else. Idk the bartolinis seem nice
