Double Bass New Evah Pirazzi slap strings from Pirastro!

in my experience, Chorda CH G string is very similar to the Evah Slap gut G string in sound, tension, gauge and feel. The tuning stability however, is greatly improved with the newer Evah slap gut G. Ofcourse not spirocore stable, but very managable and much less of an issue then with The chorda G.

I talked to a Pirastro representative at Musikmesse Frankfurt a few weeks ago and tried the Evah Slap (all synthetic core). He told me that the version with the gut strings was a temporary solution because they hadn't finished the development of the synthetic core G and D Evah Slaps. It was intended that the complete set was metal wound synthetic core Evahs.

When I tried the strings I told him that I feel that the higher strings have a tiny little bit more tension than the lower ones, but hardly noticeable at all and he acknowledged that. But I'm rather sensitive to tension differences and the Pirastro guy was astonished that I could feel that at all since the difference was so small. (I guess half a Kp difference.)

He also told me that they recommend that set also for baroque music. I tried it with the bow, not bad, but for what I usually use the tension was a bit low for me (I guess around the typical 20 Kp gut tension).

I just thought some might be interested in this.

I just installed the Evah Slap Syn G over spiro mittels with my dead stark E.
I've always adored my Oliv G, but couldn't deal with the tuning instability.
Right now, after an hour of playing, i'm really digging the Slap Syn G and i'm wondering;

Could the Evah Slap Syn G but the perfect alternative for the Oliv G?

Do you think the E, A & D strings would work with the Krivo magnetic pickup since they are steel wound? Has anyone taken a magnet to them? I ask because I have found that some other steel wound synthetic strings work like the Innovation Braided and Honey, but not all.

I'm going to try a brand new Slap Set gut G string that I've bought.
The string has a knot already done. Do you think that it'll be enough or a loop will be necessary too?

It depends on the width of your tailpiece slot. Don't forget that a loop makes the string shorter.

FWIW, I have been around the block with strings since trying these out and am now playing Spiro E (weich), Spiro A (solo), D/G synthetic Evah Slap ... and the mix of low tension, more definitive tone centre on the lower strings and gut-esque but tuning-stable D/G suits me just fine. I did have the Spiro D (solo) for a while and that works too but I think the Slap D/G just work better together. I am perfectly happy with this and do not envisage further string-experimentiation for a very long time (famous last words ....)

Pizz, they are very well matched. If I really listen hard, maybe the Slap D/G are a tiny bit quieter than the Spiro E/A but there's really next to nothing in it. That said, I am using low tension Spiros (weich E, solo A) which are quieter on my bass than Spiro mediums/reds

And there still remains the question if these are 3/4 or 4/4 Spiros as they differ in tension on the same scale.

Arco is OK. The lower tension let the string sink down more with the same bow pressure, so you might to use less weight on the bow. The Pirastro representative told me they think it would be a nice thing for baroque music.
I'm not a big fan of the light tension gut strings (around 20 kp), so I cannot give a definitive answer, but I tried them with the bow and it works.

Personally I might prefer downtuned Evah Solos (or Innovation Braided Solos) for baroque music, getting a bit more tension. But on my larger scale (110 cm) I always have a higher tension than most of you on your instruments.

I find that they are, though, obviously, you'll need to have your action up a bit higher so that you can dig in since they are so low tension.

I believe so. The Slaps are just a touch thicker in diameter than the solos, and I can't speak to what precisely is on the inside, but they seem quite similar to me.

The synthetic slaps D&G I had recently were about the same thickness as Olivs, while solo Evahs (that I had several months ago) were thin like any other steel string.
No comparison at all between them, for me.
