New Fender "Black Top" basses

Is it just me, or do the pickups on the P look to be almost in the same position as the G&L L2000?

Wow, that double-humbucker model looks great! Although it reminds me of an EBMM Stingray or Sterling.

the colours do look quite bland. what is is with this modern idea that black and greyish silver looks modern. if i had that jazz bass id strip the finnish and paint it somthing more intresting. knowing me the same colour as this

honistly this may turn into a bit of a rant but the standern colour listing for most fenders are so boring. the only newish colour i like is cola red or purple sparkle. i want to see more intresting colours. ive re-finnished guitars in car paint because i prefere those colours.

ford signal yellow (like the mk-3 cortinas and the rs capris) and rover applejack (i think some of the old sd-1's were in that colour)

I love my CFM, but I agree wholeheartedly... I'd love to see Fender break out another color series like their International series from the 80's or at least make some of the multitude of colors for the custom shop stuff available. Sunset orange, Sage & Sherwood green, so on, and while they're at it, offer more basses in honey blonde, with a nice underlying grain...

I've been following this thread hoping to catch a glimpse of these basses. I love me some Fenders, but these? Yuck. Look like bad home made mods.

Except for the "bad" description, I think that's supposed to be the idea behind Fender's thinking.

Already did back in the 90's, except it was a 5 string. I love it btw, and I'm definitely interested the new one.

I use this model as my main bass but it has been modded slightly - bone nut, bartolini pickups and preamp. It is a killer player!

The P bass should have double P bass pickups. The Jazz should have the humbuckers.

Why mess with natural P bass tone...by putting a humbucker in the sweet spot? Here is a pic of me sporting my 2008 American Std. dual P at a recent gig. If I want traditional P bass tone, I solo the neck. You couldn't do that with a black top bass.

I'd be interested in the P Bass if they put the second humbucker up at the end of the neck where it belongs. If I want that twangy, nasally, zingy bridge pickup sound I'll just use my Jazz Bass.

You guys *do* know why Fender offers limited colors on their guitars and basses, correct ?

Because things other than black, white, red, sunburst, and blue don't sell. Pretty simple really. If Fender thought lime green basses would sell, they'd offer them. Everyone likes to complain about Fenders selection/models/color/whatever, but in the end, it is a very successful brand...the MOST successful guitar brand....they know their market, and work that market extremely well. Better than any other M.I. company, pretty much.

The other advantage is the financial one. They are able to purchase larger quantities of a limited selection of paint colors, thus keeping costs down.


Incidentally, if you are looking at any of the Blacktop basses, you should just go ahead and buy one. Fender typically doesn't have models like these available for too long. (see "Big Block Precision", "Jazz 24", etc for details)

While I agree with you about lack of more interesting colors, black + chrome + maple is still a very sexy look, IMO. I just changed the pickguard on my '91 Tele to Black and I love it!

I'm going to have to get a matching Jazz at some point!!!

But Fender should offer more interesting choices. I honestly think a Jazz in the Ibanez SR300 Hot Rod Orange (or Yamaha BB414 Orange) with a Black or Tortoise pickguard would look amazing. Think I may have seen a Sadowski in that combo at some point.
