New Fender "Black Top" basses

You guys *do* know why Fender offers limited colors on their guitars and basses, correct ?

I know, I know, it's all about making money from the many instead of catering to the few (But still, to make money from the few, they have the custom shop stuff at 2-6x the price.). That and the additional costs, labor, and stuff for additional colors, they'd have to produce a bunch of them and sell them all to make the money. I guess I should be happy that they gave us 'White Chrome Pearl' as an option on these, but what was wrong with Inca Silver? Pewter? or any of the other prior colors that are similar to WCP? It looks like someone mixed Blizzard and CMF to get this. Shrug... Just not an inspiring color. Looks nice in the pics I guess, but eh... Maybe I'd be more excited about it if I just hadn't gotten my CFM FAS.

These should be out around the middle of August......
Patience is not a virtue that I possess... It's funny though.. I wonder if I could unload my black MIM P & Squier VM J and replace them with a black Blacktop P and a VM J V without the wife noticing the difference.

maple fretboards are overrated...seriously. I think half the forum members just prefer maple necks due to its looks. JMHO

I personally like rosewood boards on my passive fenders

Sounds warmer to me

Hold on a second, so Rosewood fretboards sound warmer than, I presume Maple fretboards, and therefore, the less warm sound of a Maple fretboard is overrated and half the forum members prefer it for the looks?

If you had stated that you cannot hear the difference between the fretboards as an argument that people prefer one or the other for the looks, it might be a tad more convincing.

I never said in my previous posts I cannot hear the difference. What I meant is people choose maple for it's looks rather than the sound quality. I did that too when I was younger, and I came to the conclusion that I hate the sound of maple fretboards.
What I'm really tired of is numerous posts of, only of they offered it in maple or a fiver....
Why can't people just be happy for what these companies are offering. Or just don't buy it if you don't like it.

I'm sorry, but this is possibly the most nonsensical statement I've ever read. We should just be happy with what they've offered? Why? If you go to a restaurant and your food is bad, you send it back, yes? Or do you just say "It's ok, I'm just glad they brought me something." I don't think so.

If I want a 5 string with a maple board, that's what I want. I see no reason why anyone should settle for less than what they want, regardless of price. If a company isn't offering what a customer wants, then the customer has a right to make their desires known and refuse to buy until those desires are met.

How about.... Dont buy it if you don't like it? I wouldn't buy food if I knew it was bad. I buy big macs because I love how they taste as they are. I'm not gonna goto Wendys and ask for a big mac.
If you guys want a 5 strung version with a maple board and different colors, call fender custom shop.
Sorry your analogy failed.

But you have the right to tell Wendy's that that's what you want and you're not going to buy until they make it. You also have the right to tell McDonald's that you won't buy their Big Mac if they won't make it without pickles. You don't have to buy anything that isn't exactly how you want it. You don't have to just accept it the way it comes. That's the point. We should be telling Fender and other companies we won't buy unless they offer what we want, which is contrary to your opinion that we should just "Be happy with what they offer." Sorry you missed that.

But the fact is, even if they do offer, most will not buy anyway. There is a lot of talk. Just like you said, don't buy if you don't like their offerings. It's that simple. Why do you care how many basses fender sells? They will sell every single bass they make off their line. That's the truth.

Btw, I goto Wendy's to buy a jr bacon cheeseburger. I'm not that dumb to go there to buy a big mac.
If I want that fender I'll buy that fender. If I want something like it but something they don't offer, I'll go buy it somewhere else where they do make something that I want.

That's true, you could go somewhere else and find what you're looking for. But it won't say "Fender" on the headstock. And for a lot of people, myself included, that actually does matter. I don't want just anybody to give me what I want, I want Fender to give it to me. So that's why you see all the "I wish it came with a maple board" or "I wish they came in other colors" posts.

I have the right to be called "Loretta" and to give birth even though I haven't got a womb. (Monty Python reference)

You have a right to complain about whatever you want, but Fender makes basses that they believe will sell, whether a minority like them or not. Feel free to call Wendy's and tell them they oughtta make a Big Mac, but they'll tell you to just go to McDonald's because that ain't what they do. May as well call Honda and tell them they ought to make Big Macs. Complaining about it is a waste of your time, like teaching a pig to dance - you'll fail, and the more you try the more you'll just make the pig mad. But you certainly have the right to do so.

There's not much difference between maple and rosewood in terms of tone, but some people swear there is. IMO just buy what you think looks good. For some basses, for me, that's maple - for other basses, for me, it's rosewood. I've owned both, and I hear differences between *any* two basses, whether they are both P basses, both rosewood, both maple, etc. Treat them all as individuals, just like you (hopefully) would with people, and make friends with the ones you like best, regardless of skin colour, nationality, religion, body shape, or fretboard wood. Imposing beliefs and expectations on the real world like that just leaves you angry and disappointed with reality.

If you don't like what Fender is coming out with, build your own or buy someone else's! Warmoth, All Parts, Atkinson Basses, Sadowsky, Nino Valenti, George Riszanyi - all these businesses exist for this reason.

What exactly is hilarious about it?

There is just something funny(to me) about being that loyal to a brand yet being so nitpicky about what that brand puts out. I can see it with a custom builder because that's what they do, you tell them exactly what you want and you get it(for a lot of money) but with mass production you kind of have to be content with what they offer.
