New Fender "Black Top" basses

I just looked at this thread for the first time, I think they should reintroduce and improve the fender P with that humbucker that looked like two jazz pickups stuck together - I think it was the big block. I just don't think they gave it enough of a chance - electronics were crappy but everything else seemed fine, it seems like the design has lots of potential.

No thanks! Those double J pickups are virtually impossible to replace/upgrade.

I'm really digging the dual P jazz though. Offer it with a bound and blocked maple neck and I would grab one in a heartbeat.

At the MIM pricepoint, I doubt they'll do it, but it'd be nice if the pickups they use in the BT Ps would be similar (or even the same) to the ones in the Roscoe Beck model.

I know, I know, shout heresy for saying they should use the same pickups from a bass that costs around 4 times as much as the Black Tops are likely to have for street price. But you gotta admit, it would be nice...

Are those pickups even available aftermarket?

I believe Warwick, Delano, and Rio Grande make aftermarket double J pickups. None of the upgrade options are exactly cheap, so hopefully the BT P will sound good as is, as I'm planning on getting one. <.<

The Delanos won't fit (too wide), and I haven't been able to find ANY info on the Rio Grande pickups other than that apparently they might possibly fit, and that they are really hot pickups which isn't want I'm going for. I think GFS might make one too, which I haven't tried, but it's pretty cheap.

Curtis Novak makes something close, but it's not an exact match.

Haven't looked at Warwick though.

GFS doesn't make one.
