New Fender "Black Top" basses

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. I really like the look of the Blacktop guitars, but the basses are kind of bland.

What they should have made is something like this:

I'd buy that one.

The bridges look the same as on the VM Squiers.

Looks more like the bridge on my Fender MIA Jazz. If they were Squiers, it would have said that in the article. They're Fenders.

I agree the double P just doesn't look right without a reversed pickup in there!

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that the neck P isn't in the "correct" P bass location, it's much to far towards the neck.

I dislike that.

The Jaguar basses seem to be holding their own, and it is perhaps the success of that line, particularly the Squier, that has Fender engaging in gimmickry. Let's face it, MII Squiers have been stealing MIM Fenders' thunder, recently, and this Blacktop project is simply a corporate strategy to provide some counteractive balance, and keep the Fender brand even more present in the marketplace.

Fender sells what people want... like all successful companies, they adhere to the principles of supply and demand. People want variations on the same old themes so that's what Fender gives them. I think your frustration is misplaced... perhaps you should be disgusted with bass players for being too conservative in their taste for gear.

Although, really, you could expand on that line of thinking and be disgusted with all bass players in general because plunking a piece of steel stretched across a piece of wood is a bit ANALOG, right? If any of us truly wanted blinding innovation, we wouldn't even be playing guitar, which is hundreds-of-year-old technology, we'd be making digital music.

That's because it's a jazz bass with two split coils, not a dual pickup P bass.

How much you want to bet that the D&G strings on that Jazz w/ dual splits will be ungodly nasal? The bridge pup shoud have been reversed, IMO.

I know this is a P bass and all, but would it benefit tonally is the bridge pick up was removed and place near the neck?

IIRC this reminds me of a 4 string version of the Fender CS bass Christian Olde-Wolbers played in FF.

i did a p double back in the 70's. it's best left there. now, some big single nordies in that double 'bucker body...
