i just gotta say other than james jamerson and a few others, john paul jones is what i consider to be what being a bass player is all about

not only is he a fearless musician as this video clearly demonstrates but he's a humble man who loves music and emphasizes many a times that one should appreciate all kinds of music

he can groove like nobody's business and harmonize like he was the breathe of the song

long live JOHN PAUL JONES!

To dredge up some of the comments from earlier in the thread - first off, I have to agree that I find some of Page's guitar work sloppy. Robert Plant can be annoying ("... does anyone remember the laughter?" from film soundtrack The Song Remains The Same - annoying line!!!!).

That said, I do think they have written a number of songs that stand up to reinterpretation and have stood the test of time, and IMHO some of them are:

Stairway To Heaven (saw Zappa play this live with Ike Willis on vocals -AMAZING)
Fool In The Rain
Over The Hills and Far Away
Misty Mountain Hop

And you can look at the entire Led Zepplin catalog re-interpreted by the band Dread Zepplin as reggae songs, sung by an Elvis Presley impersonator- how is that for re-interpretation? - and they crush it live.

Totally agree with this. JPJ was one of my earliest influences since starting on bass about 25 years ago, and is still very influential to this day, both for his playing *and* the reasons that you state above... great musician.

Although I'm rather late to the party I always though that "Led Zeppelin II" was one of the "must" albums to learn bass from. Yeah....I love his "solo" in "The Lemon Song." Still gives me shivers to this day.

But reading Jones' interviews in GP and later in BP made me pay attention to his playing. Now if he and Bonzo had hooked up with a real songwriter like Townsend, and a real rock 'n' roll singer like Paul Rogers, that'd have been a great band.

It was easy for a casual listener to overlook JPJ, with Page's screeching and preening and Page's riffs and wild soloing and flaming dragon moon bell-bottom outfits.

JPJ just did his thing and was awesome at his craft. Could play as fast or slow as anyone, groove around and interact wonderfully with Bonham, and could solo like mofo when he stretched it out.

John Paul Jones is an absolute legend, and in my opinion the best musician in an amazing band!

His playing has influenced my style so much, I can't imagine what I would be as a bassist if he had never recorded those albums!

Listen to more!!!!! The whole Zeppelin II album is a rock bass bible, the same could be said for the entire Zeppelin catalog!
