New found respect for John Paul Jones.

JPJ is in my top three all time favorite rock bassists along with Geddy and John Entwistle. IMO he was the most talented member of Zeppelin.

Actually something I wrote not even 24 hours ago on the Blues Bass Player thread...
Need to also mention JPJ since my very first walking bass line was playing Zeppelin's THE OCEAN when I was kid in my first garage band. Very cool when a song opens a kids eyes to a whole world beyond riding the root.

Not very. Zep music is unavoidable. You pretty much can't listen to any TV or radio without hearing it.
wow. so much dislike for zep. i dig zep, but i toke up, too, so maybe that has something to do with it... no... can't be, i usually listen to pink floyd when i'm ripped.

jpj is one amazing bass player though. you gotta give the dude some credit. bonzo was pretty good, too. but i read an interview with buddy rich who said he wasn't impressed with bonzo's style... of course... who could doubt that a jazz drummer isn't impressed with a rock n roll drummer.

I've never been a Led Zep fan. Never will.
But you have to respect them for what they produced at their time in the music world.
It wasnt like it is now, where we have a multitude of bands, tones, sounds, effects, amps, basses, ect..............and music to emulate.
They were pioneers in rock music!
And it still cracks me up when someone wants to try to get that "JPJ" tone............

I'll quickly jump on the bandwagon here & say that J.Page's gtr playing is/was SUPERB - sure there werre mistakes, BUT I'D MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH rather hear a few mistakes in a song/solo with FEEL & SOUL in it, than some of the STERILE stuff thats out there today-& B4- stuff thats been 'cleaned up' , no "soul" in it, no feel, PLAYED so much, that all the 'spontenaity' ( Spelling check PLEASE!!) has been 'ironed out'
Secondly JPJ was an AWESOME bassist/keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist- he played SO many instruments( all well too) IT JUST AINT FUNNY. & was/is a great producer/arranger/writer also. He was a 1st call session muso B4 ZEP.......... Duh?!?!?
Oh & +1 for Deacon too. Listen to the bass line of "you're My Best friend"- He wrote the song - as well as providing a sublime bass part!

+1 on JPJ being a ridiculously awesome bass player. i wasn't a zep fan for years and he's what finally won me over, now i really enjoy them. he's probably my biggest influence as a rock player.
to all the page haters, you guys do know that he was an in-demand session guy way before pro-tools was allowing people to punch in their parts bar-for-bar, right? try telling all the producers and engineers paying to put his slop on 2" reel to reel what a mediocre guitar player he is.

The "sold a lot of records" method of establishing superiority I see around here befuddles me, to put it kindly.
+ a billion and a half. It's remarkable the way some folks have to resort to name-calling and personal attacks when their favorites are criticized.
Who gives a crap about Jimmy Page's soloing? This is a thread about John Paul Jones, the bassist, on a board about bassists, which itself is part of a website devoted to bass and bass players in general. I could probably count the guitar solos I care about on one hand.
so true about this websiteAnother John Paul Jones bass line that most people don't even think about - Gallows Pole. And the monster line on Achilles Last Stand. I think that's one of the few Zep tracks where he plays an 8 string.
He was a player I listened to as a kid because my brother loved Zep. I never really appreciated his playing then, but I do now. Major influence in my playing.

Uh, I do. Pages solos were a huge part of Zeppelin.
I care about guitar playing. In fact, I always make sure our sound man has our guitar player LOUD in the mix because it makes us sound better.
I take issue with someone saying Page is a crappy (sloppy, lacking feel, emotion, inspiration or whatever) guitar player because it's an absolutely absurd thing to say. At least from a rock perspective. If you think Jimmy Page is a bad rock guitar player then you either don't like hard rock or you don't know what you're talking about. You might not care for his style but you can't say he was crappy.
Page took risks. He pushed the envelope. And he played very fast at times. I like that. So did John McLaughlin. He was jagged and on the edge at times too. Page's solos were extremely melodic, with TONS of feel and intensity.

I'm a longtime Zep fan, and have tremendous respect/admiration for all of the band members and their abilities.
