New found respect for John Paul Jones.

I see a few assumptions you're making there. One being that I don't like Jimmy Page's guitar playing. I do. I've just never been that excited over guitar solos. I'm more a fan of the riff than the lead. I like his playing a lot, but more for the riffs than the solos.
The second is that because I don't go all wide eyed at guitar soloing, that I don't care about guitar playing. Big difference. But then, I play in a metal genre that, while it often has lead guitar, has very few solos. I like it that way.
And, of course, you are assuming that I suck or I have an inferiority complex. And that's just silly.
I was merely getting frustrated that the thread about John Paul Jones was turning into a debate about the merits of Jimmy Page's guitar solos. Which I thought was a bit odd for a bunch of bassists posting on a thread about a bassists on a subforum about bassists on a board called talkBASS.
I care about his soloing , in fact my favourite part of Stairway to heaven is the solo
Yeah, someone certainly has a complex.
Rule #1: Respect your fellow members
All registered users must address fellow members with the utmost respect at all times. If you do not agree with a fellow member, be courteous in your response. Thomas Jefferson said it best: "When I hear another express an opinion which is not mine, I say to myself, he has a right to his opinion, as I to mine".
Because of the limitations of text based communication, the expression of intent can be tricky. One of the most common triggers of rule violations is the misinterpretation of intent behind a post. Use smilies often, and remember, it never hurts to begin a response with "In my opinion"...
If you do not address everyone on the board with respect, be prepared to lose your membership.
It's more the assumption that just because I don't go wild over guitar solos, that I don't like rock guitar playing that bugs me. Or that it makes me an inferior bassist.
I say this with as much respect as is due but, this could have been a good thread if it weren't for JTE. Might as well close it.
Led Zep is that much better with JPJ being there.

I would agree with the first part. If someone doesn't like Led Zeppelin, why post on a thread about them, or rather, their bass player?
I agree. JPJ was an often overlooked but very important contributor to their sound. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were very flashy (I mean that in a good way) and active onstage while JPJ inconspicuously played awesome bass.
JTE just expressed an opinion. This could have been a good discussion if people hadn't jumped all over him. Just because Zep is the center of your music universe, that doesn't make JTE an idiot because he doesn't see things the same way. The OP originally posted about JPJ. JTE chimed in and said that he never got past Page and Plant enough to really listen to JPJ. It was a valid opinion. He got jumped all over by guys who think Zep is the best thing ever. This caused me to jump in. I kinda went too far myself but I just got a little shocked my the idiotic things that were being said about a fellow TBer. If I offended, I apologize. I shouldn't have allowed myself to get sucked in. Cheers to all.
I disagree, this thread is essentially intended to be an appreciation thread. So would you go into a sadowsky bass thread and say how much you dislike sadowsky basses?
Not only bass, but JPJ was a tremendous keyboardist, as well as arranger, mandolin player, lap steel player (check out Nosumi Blues on Zooma), etc. He was a well known session player long before hooking up with Jimmy Page. I can only imagine what it must have been like to hear them play during the dates they played in Scandinavia as the New Yardbirds with Bonham and Plant.

I think I expressed my dis-agreement without resorting to name calling: heck, I even posted examples of good playing from both Page and Larry Carlton.
It's just music...I don't agree with JTE saying that all Jimmy Page solo's are sloppy and devoid of passion, but rather than getting uptight about it I posted an example that TO ME negates his opinion.
That's how it should be: we should be free to disagree on here a little more than is currently happening.
Otherwise, expect the equivalent of "nanny state" moderation, which will be necessary to keep this place focused and on topic.
I don't think nanny state moderation is ever necessary.
My vote is to express opinions without restriction and let individuals decide for themselves what's valid or not. Freedom of expression doesn't exclude possibly giving offense. I think we can handle that. We're not fighting in the streets.

I am not going to defend any of the off topic comments made on this topic but some of the postings initially putting down certain members of LZ seemed inflammatory and meant to raise the emotional responses I've read here. There really was no reason to make such a seemingly conscious effort to put down musicians most people consider talented. Too bad when comments like those are made a good thread is derailed.
So, back on topic - I also highly recommend bass players listen to the solo material JPJ has put out. Very different from what you might have expected. While it's not going to be appealing to the mainstream listener, dig up a copy of the album he did with Diamanda Galas (sp?). Some really interesting compositions and bass work.
I listened to nothing but Led Zeppelin thru high school in the 80s. At the time I didn't even know what a bass player does in a rock band, didn't even know what an electric bass guitar was. 
I gave the Zep a rest for about 20 years and got in to bass during that period.
After exploring Grunge, Punk, Jazz, Funk and vintage R&B I figured I'd probably outgrown this band. Not so!!! Last year I got that download package where you get everything they ever released ($100 - great buy IMHO) and found that, unlike a lot of the things I used to be way into, this band totally holds up!
20 years ago I was completely oblivious to what JPJ was even doing, but this time around, now that I do it for a living I guess you could say I'm a little more bass conscious.
And JPJ is completely blowing me away. I love how he locks in with Bonzo with such absolute authority and I'd say he's now one of my top 5 tone idols for electric bass.

My point is (for example) if someone wants to say Jimmy Page or Led Zeppelin are crummy and overrated, let them. And if others of us challenge and even deride those views, that's ok too. And if it becomes a food fight, oh well, BFD. I'd rather have a spirited debate than a phony, sterile one with a buch of PC posturing and moralizing.
