So Ibanez has a 7 string Bass/Guitar hybrid coming out this year (Japan only for now). It's tuned
B-E-A-D-G-C-E
Which is normal for 7string right?
Also this one " SR7VIISC " is only a 30" scale.
It's played like a guitar.

To everyone making generic "useless instrument" comments, are you forgetting the fact that you can use this to make music?

Isn't there a rule against disparaging other people's instrument choice? Or does scale and tuning make a difference?
The video didn't show much, but I did like the chord he played and wouldn't mind trying it (spacing may be an issue).
Do you really thing GC will even contemplate stocking these?

Wrong, you've not been here long but I'll tell you that the mods- JT especially - make a point of not tolerating abuse and insults towards instruments on the grounds of their configuration. JT has long carried the torch for ERB's here and the policy extends to other such niche instruments, this included.
By not knocking what you know nothing about, the forum keeps an open mind.
Paraphrased letter of the(TB)law: Don't call a bass *ugly* unless you own it. It's a known pyro-accelerant.

I think you've pretty much owned every hater in this thread. I personally would love to try this bass, and can see a HUGE amount of potential uses for it, in a band or solo setting. I think i personally would step a bit out of my comfort zone and use a pick on it, due to the spacing.

While I'd like the idea of a cheaper, more available 7 stringer, this is not right. I want a 7 string bass, not a 7 string guitar with Bass Strings. I'd pass.

I dig it, and think that it could be a very usable instrument. (even if I'd tune it like a Bass VI with an additional high string, were I ever to get one)

I would call this a contra-baritone guitar. At least that's the term I've been using to describe myself a lot lately. I've been into writing guitar-style parts, but playing them on my 5-string tuned E-C. Of course when I try to find a bassist to play with me, they freak out about having 2 bassists in the same band (I've actually had guys scream at me about it)... hence the term contra-baritone guitarist.
Back on topic... I'm on love. Can someone hand me a napkin or two?

ok, one big question for me: we all know that low B's feel very loose and sound worse the smaller the scale gets. but, this can be compensated a little by using higher string gauges.
now, how can it be that this bass' B string is even functioning when the string is only a '120 and the scale 30.5 (if i remember correctly)?
to me that sounds completely opposite to what i know works and it should feel like spaghetti.
any ideas?

- Full disclosure, I'm a certified Fender technician working in a music store that carries Fender, Yamaha, and Ibanez products among others.
And just like fat women in G strings, there's a market for this instrument, too.
There was a time I would've loved this instrument. Then I stopped playing baritone in a metal band. At that price, I could put together twice the instrument at Warmoth. I could own a GT-7 and have dough left for a nice combo (hmm...). I'm going shopping now.
Perhaps it won't be a floppy as one may think because this instrument is meant to be played with more of a guitar technique [lighter plucking].
My brother used to have one of those Ibanez 8 strings!

Although he never played it as much as his Ibanez K-7 so he bought an Ibanez Xiphos instead!
I like the look of this Ibanez 7 string. It sounds good, and it could certainly be useful for coming up with some great sounds.

I think you got that wrong. That's a guitar. At least I hope so
I'd like to try one, looks pretty damn nice, as a BassVI style instrument. Just gotta hope the street price as good.

For 2K something, I doubt Ibanez is going to make a successful run with this instrument. Even for many metal bands, this isn't a practical full time solution for either bass or guitar roles. Then again, the 8 string wasn't practical until Meshuggah began using them. If they went for about $700 and I had some spare money, I'd probably try one. Imagine that through an old tweed Fender Bassman drenched in a deep tremolo pedal.
