New Head: Valkyrie from Baer Amps... Thoughts?

I am lucky enough to have received a pair of ML112'sfor christmas. I am now considering what amp to get to partner it with.

I currently have an EA iamp 800 and a Tecamp Blackjag. In the short time I have had i am not really sold on either with these cabs. Not sure if it is the class D thing, although I note comments on this forum that it is not so much the class of the amp but more the individual amp whch delivers the tone.

I am considering the Mesa M9 which i have used and love The punch it delivers, or the Glockenklang heart rock.

Anyone have any experience or recommend a head to go with the cabs?

Not sure about the Tecamp model you have, but I know that the Puma's have been described as being very wide sounding (as is the iAmp-800) -- very deep, pretty treblely, somewhat scooped sounding: probably not the best match for these cabs, unless that's the tone you're looking for.

I would think that a Genz Benz ShuttleMAX 9.2, Markbass F1, F500, or SD1200 would be great matches with those cabs.

Any amp that is tight in the low end and balanced everywhere else should work fine

I tend to prefer amps that don't have a big built in top end boost with the ML112's, but that's just my preference. The ML112's can really bring out a nice "bass" response to amps that have flatter responses. George over at Bass Gear Direct has been using a Glockenklang with the ML112's and has commented on how much he likes that combination.

I have some new manufacturing partners in place and we are making really good progress every week. I'm doing everything possible to meet our goal of shipping these in spring and with a little luck, I think we can pull that off.

Bear in mind that these are rock-voiced cabs, so a punchy, rock-voiced amp would be the best way to make the most of them...

The Mesa M9 or Glockenklang Heart Rock that you suggested should each work well, I would think. I personally have three mid-powered, rock-voiced amps that I will be trying out very soon for the pair of ML112s I own: a Gallien Krueger 700RB-II, a Mesa Boogie M-Pulse 600, and an Eden Nemesis RS700. I expect that each one of those combinations will generate its own unique flavor of great... :cool:

The M9 has a HUGE low end (very wide low end... to me a poorly voiced hi passing, but others love all that 30hz coming through) and a MASSIVE brightness in the upper mids. To me, not the best match to get the most out of the Baer, which is punchy and inherently a touch bright. The M9 has plenty of EQ to help somewhat with that baked in tone, but again, that would not be my choice for these cabs.

The Heartrock was a bit flubby sounding down low (had one for a while), and more 'hi fi' up top, again, not a great match IMO (although the Heartrock II supposedly fixes some of that). Huge, heavy head though. Given the nice efficiency of the ML112's, if you wanted that kind of Glock tone, I'd consider waiting a few months until the Blue Soul (or whatever their new lightweight modelis called) starts shipping..... 2/3's the power of the HeartRock, 1/3rd the weight, and plenty of power to drive the ML112's to their full output. Supposedly uses the HeartRock II front end.

Per the above, I LOVE the tone of the Markbass F500 through the ML's.. tight and even. For the big, fat, more old school thing, the Streamliner from Genz is killer.

If you don't mind the size, the Genz 9.2 would probably be my first choice if I was starting over and had two ML112's. The head is a bit larger than a micro, but has massive EQ, very good power, and a much more controlled low end than the Mesa, and a bit more punch and grind than the very smooth Glock voicing.

IMO, and just some ideas. If you don't need tons of volume and like a warm, organic tone, I would think the Mesa Walkabout would kill with these cabs, but haven't had the pleasure of trying that one.

I mentioned my M6 experience in the thread on the ML112 cab. I don't think it would be my first choice with this cab, depending on which bass you use. I'm not as bothered by the low-end in the head as Ken is, but his point about the brightness and high-end is dead on. The mid driver and the EQ of the cab voicing deliver plenty of cut. At lower volumes, it seemed like the highs stood out more than the lows. As the volume goes up, the lows do come through more. The M9 has a similar voice, but more EQ options to dial things in.

400/700/900W into 8/4/2 ohms, two-band parametric mids, solid-state preamp with a blendable tube... nice specs on paper at least. I love my TF750, and the Valkyrie seems to be in the same vein in terms of size and performance.

Did any of you who were at NAMM get a chance to hear it? Thoughts? Bowlus, where are you? I've emailed Roger for pricing and timeline to availability (quoted on the website as Summer '10).

Additionally, Roger's got an 8-ohm 112 and a 4-ohm 212 in the works too; although I'm more interested in the Valkyrie, if anyone's got opinions on those, I'd welcome that as well.
