I'm in the house camp. $12K for a bass is beyond my comprehension, but that's just me.
As has been stated, the house is an investment, or should be. The bass will never appreciate in value — or at least certainly not nearly at pace with real estate.

Compromise - when you inevitably get turfed out on your keister, you're gonna have a REMARKABLE makeshift buckeye burl "roof" for a day or two before it gets cold, and then for one whole night, you'll have a roaring fire! And then you're screwed.

That being said, you have a choice of being divorced and homeless with a nice bass or married, in a Lake house, with whatever "normal" bass it is that you have now. Doesn't sound like that difficult of a decision.

But the house, always the house, especially a lake house. Bass is fun and all but a lake house is something that will pay off in so many other ways. YMMV

I think the vast majority of talkbass would also not spend 12 grand on a bass lol

You guys did not read the post carefully. This is for the lake housie which is a secondary house. I do not think the OP is financially hurting in anyway.

That said, in response to some commenters on how this should be a no brainer: a lake house is also a luxury. Just because it’s a more conventional luxury than a dream bass doesn’t make it the default choice.

choosing between your home and a bass. Easy. Choosing between a nice musical instrument and a potential money pit that happens to be next to a large puddle….. may not be the easy choice for some that it is to others.

the primary concern is the development of a big resentment sandwich - and those do come in both ‘his’ and ‘hers’ models. Discuss. Negotiate. Reach consensus. Commit. Don’t look back.

Then it’ll feel a lot better when you eat that deposit. Good luck. They keep churning out awesome basses. A good partner is hard to find.
