New Ibanez Talman

i have always liked the the Talman body shape but was dissapointed when they quit using the lipstick tube pickups. (on the guitars that is)
Hmmm, don't be giving me ideas and excuses to spend money like that! There are some nice lipstick replacement pickups out there, and some of the guitar ones work just as well for bass. I also remember seeing a J drop in replacement - two of them together with the inner tabs removed would fit right in the bridge route of the TMB300. :) I'd like to see someone make a P style where each half was a mini-lipstick tube - has anybody seen something like that out there? A lipstick conversion 300 would rawk. :)

So I just got mine in today. I really really like it. It's only been an hour or so but it feels great (ever so slight dive but nothing terrible). The pickups sound as they should. Solo'd P sounds as you'd expect. And the treble and bass knobs allow a little bit of fine tuning. I wish the blend had a more pronounced detent but better to play by ear anyway. And the neck is glossy which I don't love but am not going to change just yet as it feels really good. All in all a high quality piece from ibanez!

Dude! Stinky green. Want.

Please post pics and a review. One of very few basses that give me GAS. Really curious how the bridge pickup sounds.
I think the TMB-100 surf green (or whatever it's called) is even stinkier. But I want that color in a 300. With lipstick pickups. :)

That blue looks nice! So how is the bass after some more time with it? Is the neck pickup a typical P bass sound?

For the glossy neck, I think that it may be just on the TMB300. And the TMB100 may have a satin neck. If you look at the page for the 300, they say that the gloss neck is one of the features. And it looks shiny in the photos. The 100 does not have the gloss listed as a feature and it looks non-shiny in the photos.

@JonW I can get what I would consider a good P sound. With the bass and treble controls I can get it to sound like my fender p bass, but i like it with the tone all the way open and some new string zing so YMMV I suppose. The position of the pickup is a quarter inch closer to the neck which might put some people off, but I think it is perfectly fine. As for the neck, it is absolutely awesome. Very smooth and beautiful. I am extremely happy with this purchase! The single coil/double coil difference is also pretty amazing. It's subtle but definitely there. The single coil does hum, but thats to be expected. All in all I think the extra $100 is worth it for the blocks, and double J!

Great, thanks for the thoughts! OK, the neck pickup is, indeed, a little closer to the neck. Good to know, although I don't know if such a small change would have much effect on the tone. Also great to hear that it's well put together and all that, especially the neck. I think that necks are a strong suit for Ibanez, generally speaking. These Talmans can be so cheap, at $200 for the lower end one, that I could not help but be curious here. I like the color that you got. OK, a Talman is on the consideration list. :)

@JonW As I think others have mentioned, Soda Blue looks to be a "Guitarcenter family" exclusive. (I got mine from amazon through WWBW)

I would have to say this is easily on par with fender's VM quality wise, and possibly getting to CV territory. (Again, let it be known im a full tone, less discriminating hobby player)

I've been spending way too much lately, but I'm sorely tempted by both the soda blue 300 and that surf green they only have in the 100. Forest green in 3rd and gaining. :D
