Hey all, I've been lurking here for a while, figured this might be a good place to jump in.
I'm Caleb, primarily a drummer, but I've been playing bass for a few years now, and I get to love it more every day. I'm mostly into jazz and funk, though definatley more the deep groovey end of it than the ultra flashy end of it.
I've learned a ton from lurking here, and while it's been just bedroom bassing up till now, I'm hoping to start taking it more seriously now, and mabye this forum can help me more if I actually participate(who knows, mabye I'll help someone too).

Hi dude the riverhead is a jupiter series.It has a headstock unlike the earlier ones the looked like steinbergers.(I also have one of these which is my practice bass).It has two single coil pickups and the head has the tuning keys at 90 degrees to each other. ie. the "e and "a tuners point at the sky...the other two point behind you on the bottom side of the head.
The reason I'm still playing it is that its neck is the BEST. Many a guitar player and other bassists have commented on how easy it is to play.Its also very light,despite having a body similar to the 90's models warwicks.

Hey there. That name's Mike, I'm a Londoner who's currently living in Exeter (Southwest U.K.) doing the first year of an Archaeology degree.
Been playing the Bass for five days now, although I have previous 'Low-End' experience playing the Tuba for my school Orchestra. I got to Grade 2 on that, so I can read basic music (Although my sight-reading isn't too hot through lack of practice, hadn't played an instrument for over two years before my bass) and know how to keep a rhythym. At the moment I'm still getting to grips with the 'mechanics' of playing
bass, but I feel as if I'm slowly getting there

I guess it just took me a while to find this place...
I've been poking around and posting for a month or so, and just yesterday decided to get off my a$$ and pony up a contribution. TB is a great forum filled with (mostly) useful info and helpful people, and I'm enjoying the heck out of it! It's certainly worth a $20 dontaion.
I've been a couch guitar player for nearly 20 years, and about 6 months ago started jamming with a friend (a very talented and experienced musician). About 3 months ago, he decided it was time to get a band together for an indie-rock project. Well, damnitall if he didn't ask me to play bass for him. Hell, what did I know about playing bass? Alright, what the heck. Let's give it a run.
As it turns out, it's all coming pretty easy. My tendancies as a guitar player are mostly rhythm/groove oriented, and my knowedge of music, scales, chord structure, etc. certianly has made a huge difference in my learning curve.
Like I do with pretty much every hobby, I've jumped into bass playing and gear with both feet (maybe it's just another justification for GAS!) and I'm digging the hell out of it.

I'm not a youngster any more but reached a 'reasonable' beginner standard on my bass a couple of years back but the band folded, without gigging!
I've now picked it up again and just love practicing. I'm determined to reach a proficient standard and take it from there. I love music and wish beyond all else that I'd been allowed to play as a youngster (parents told me they weren't musical so therefore nor was I).
I live in the Lake District in the UK and will be looking for a decent tutor sometime soon.
I have a Yamaha TRB4 that I've owned from new and love to bits. I'd like a Status someday too.
I sold my Crate 100W Combo a while back and have ordered a Laney R1 for home use. Presently using a Squier 15W practice amp.
Also bought a Zoom B2, so much better than the old 708 IMHO!
So you can see I'm well at the nuube end of the spectrum.
I'm into motorcycling and kayaking/canoeing where I can claim some proficiency

erm yeah i'd like to say Hi so well HI. yeah i have beein playing bass for a tiny time of bout a month and a bit.
i got a peavey milestone 3 which i got cheap with amp. i always wanted to play bass but never got round to it.
im learning as fast as i can because im already in a band well we call ourselves a band... more like people who make a noise lol. but its coming together.

Hi guys,As a 40something year old player,I can offer these words of advice.LEARN TO SING as well as play good bass.In my home town I'm one of the few bass players who sings (mainly backing harmonies but also lead for a few songs).
As a result I've never been out of work for over 20-plus years of pro playing.I keep getting asked to stay with bands I've filled in with.
It sure doesn't hurt to have that little bit extra to offer.

I'm a 50's something bass player. I've been playing for 33 years. What I would add to the last post is to learn to read music. Learn all you can about music. Listen to all kinds of music. Try playing all kinds of music.
If you do, you'll see that its all the same. And what you learn in one style will help the others.
Read as many books as you can. Learn to think. Learn to love.

A Washburn Force 4. I play thru a Peavey TNT 115 Mike thru.
a Macky 2800 watt PA with the rest of the band. Also play guitar and vocal. Main GIG is bass player for the ( Rail Jumpers ) Blues and Southern Rock. Around and south of Daytona Beach, Fl.

Hi all... new lurker here. Actually, hehe, I've been a drummer for about 30 years, degree from Berklee and all that. But since I was always listening to the bass player, I thought it would be fun to play bass as well. So, I picked up a MiM Jazz bass back in 1992 and have been noodling around on it ever since. But its really not that great a bass, so I put in some better pots and some Bartolinis... sounds a lot better now. And I've also decided to put a Warmouth fretless neck on it because the old stock neck is crapola and I always wanted a fretless.
Recently, I went shopping for a new fretted 4-string. I played just about every in-stock J-bass I could find and ended up putting some cash down on an Ash-bodied bass that really sounded amazing, has a great neck and makes me want to get serious about playing bass again.
I also have a GK 400rb, 2x10 Eden cabinet and a cool little Line 6 Bass Pod xt.
I'm mostly going to be recording direct to my home ProTools rig, not gigging.
Seems like a really great forum, I'm enjoying reading what everyone is posting

Recently, I went shopping for a new fretted 4-string. I played just about every in-stock J-bass I could find and ended up putting some cash down on an Ash-bodied bass that really sounded amazing, has a great neck and makes me want to get serious about playing bass again.
I also have a GK 400rb, 2x10 Eden cabinet and a cool little Line 6 Bass Pod xt.
I'm mostly going to be recording direct to my home ProTools rig, not gigging.
Seems like a really great forum, I'm enjoying reading what everyone is posting

and I am 51 going on 15 .bought a Gretsch G2202 Electromatic from E-Bay and loving it ..this is my first guitar or any instrument
but I do have a question or two
1. I would like to get a acoustic bass just to mess around with around the camp fire and such .does any one have one of the $100.00 ones from E-Bay. Are they worth the 100 bucks?
2. My Gretsch is a short scale bass I would like get a long one to .How are the cheep ones off of E-Bay
I live 3hours from the closest music store
As my playing improves I will upgrade my guitars but for now the cheep ones will do

As a bass player of many years I would suggest if you are thinking of purchasing a cheap acoustic bass I'd make the shopping trip and try out a few basses. I dont own an acoustic but the few I have played varied in quality soooooo much,and not just according to price.
There's nothing worse than a bass that you cant stand playing 'cause it sounds like crap and is uncomfortable for your hands.
