Good thing this is the effects forum and I don't give a poopie about his technique, unless its a technique demo. But then again, I wouldn't watch something like that.
Tried mine out at band practice last night and it's a keeper! A ridiculously loud, heavy, high gain keeper. I think i favor the LED clipping, but i need to open it up and back down the volume a bit.
We were working on some slow heavy drones and the M85 just sounded incredible. One of my guitarists said that it sounded like a giant monster roaring and stomping on buildings, i think he was even more excited about it than i was.

That's what I did. That way it isn't a butt-ton louder than the silicon setting. Still a little bit louder, but easier to deal with on the fly, as I'm still working the dials on gigs and still haven't settled on one sound
Pretty cool demo. sounds better than the first demo they uploaded which I thought sounded kinda rough. for a rat based distortion pedal, it does sound kinda fuzzy, but edgy. may not be the kind of distortion pedal I'm looking for, but it does sound great.

It replaced a Greedtone OD clone. That one's a great pedal too, but I'm trying not to go bigger than a PT Jr so for now it's off.
My M85 just landed, filling a spot that was once for an SFT. It's a keeper for me- The wet/dry mixing is what I have been missing, and the range of color is good.
Played solo, I prefer the midrange of the LED mode and imagine that it will poke through a little better with the ISoKP band.

Yes, when you do "I Think I Love You" or "I Woke Up In Love This Morning," it will kick ass in LED mode, but for "I'll Meet You Halfway," I prefer silicon.
I went from being kinda meh on LED mode at first to leaving it in LED most of the time now. I think it does pop through the mix better, plus it sounds fuller on the lows to me. Generally, though, the harder a sound I get out of it, the more I prefer silicon. As always, YMMV. But I think you will love it even more with a band than you do now. Have fun!
What? Distortion on The Partridge tunes? I would have thought there was a law against that? I´d like to hear it
Actually...we're not a Partridge cover band, but "I Think I Love You" might work as a metal/ska/polka.
I really want to try this thing. There are a few pedals I have on my immediate GAS list but this one may have to move up there to #1...... As soon as my amp is fixed and paid for, I think the MXR will be next in line.
Did some more tweaking yesterday morning, found a sweet low-to-mid gain LED mode that'll probably be my new always-on OD. Stacks well with the Palmer Bazz too, which is kind of surprising to me.

A few at-home observations about the M85:
Compared to the SFT I owned previously, this unit has more low end going on, even without mixing in the dry signal.
I adjusted the LED trimpot to about 25% (factory set at full-on) and toggled between the LED/Silicon modes. At this setting, the volume is still a little higher on LED mode, but I am definitely hearing a difference between the two when soloed- very useful! To my ears, the benefit from having the two modes, aside from a wider range of effect, is that the two modes interact differently with other effects in the signal chain.
The pronounced midrange of the LED mode can get peaky and gnarly (which can be desirable) when used in combination with a sweeping filter or with a flanger that has some feedback going on- This can be smoothed out by adjusting the other effect’s parameters. However, switching to Silicon mode seems to make the distorted sound float above the range of the modulation and filter effects. Both modes sound like an angry beast with an octave.
The more time I spend with it, the more I like it! As with any effect, it will take me some time to learn how to take advantage of its range. Unfortunately, the next gig coming up is an "acoustic", volume-down situation
