New Pedal: Osiris PHILter

View attachment 7100341 Here's a take with my P-bass on the studio version of 'Ship of Fools' I have the Broughton HP/LP on and the PHILter on NF set at ~330hz and Q at 75%.. why not? 😅 ..it ain't perfect and mixed high but headphones are still advised.. what do you all think? Of course, playing on flatwounds with a pick is probably a large part of the tone here...
That sounds great. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! I had the Broughton HP/LP set around 40/3Khz and used the filter to Notch at 330, but good to know I can take that LP lower, though it seems counter-intuitive that less highs help you cut through better live, I'm sure it's tried and true. I am somewhat confused about Bandpass mode on the PHILter.. does it create two resonant peaks, and how far do they extend? Or one?

The band-pass filter is just like it says, it lets through a band of frequencies and the Q controls the width of how much gets let through. It's fast becoming my favorite setting.

I'd read somewhere (might have been from you on here) that Phil favored the BP filter. I think I get what it says, but it's hard for me to determine exactly how wide the slope is/where the frequency attenuation starts to occur around the center frequency.. hence using my familiar bandpass with the Broughton since I know where the cutoff starts on each end, and using the PHILter to Notch out in the mud zone.

It's hard to visualize! I should just ask for some pro-tips.. have you found a favored area for Frequency center and width of Q on BP? Of course it could differ per bass and room..

I'm still exploring, but usually between 4 and 6 o'clock depending on what sound I want. Q to taste. I generally set it by listening only to the filtered sound.

I'm thinking that means extreme left (45hz) is 12 o'clock, or upside down so 12 is 6..?Otherwise the Frequency centers would be higher then expected, and then off the dial 😅 still developing my taste for Q, too.. and wondering if when Q is at extreme left how far the slope extends 🤔 I will explore setting it by filter only.. thanks Edwin! Perhaps I am overthinking by trying to conceptualize the slopes and should just be practicing and listening more..

...i can only imagine....what a time to be a deadhead!!
Yep, most of the shows I caught were in the '71-75 era, and then the next year or three after the break. The handful of shows I saw with a semi healthy Pig were by far the highlight.

As far as EQ for Phil tones, my favorite zone is the fingerpicked EB thing he did sporadically, as heard on Live Dead and Skull and Roses. I roll my own filter preamps (non commercial, open source, both onboard and pedals), only play fretless fours with pressurewounds, and for me a ~5dB resonant LPF boost a little south of 4kHz is a good start towards the woody bouncy aspects that I enjoy when doing Dead covers. But which cab I'm using and especially which tweeter it has makes a huge difference IME and IMO.

Most of the folks i know who saw them back in the day say the same thing...two drummers with Pig in his prime was their favorite.
I just missed the two drummer/Pig era as far as live shows, and not for lack of trying, but the two '71 shows I saw with Pig front and center were still extra special.

Yeah, I started with visualizing the slopes, but found that it was less than helpful. As I get more used to it, though, I'm able to predict what I'm going to get more reliably. I used it last night with just a Grace M303 for my rehearsal (everyone on IEMs) and it was superflexible and I was able to get a lot of really good tones with my Jazz Bass, from modern R&B to country.

Lucky bones! Right space and time..

You Sir are a rarity in preferring Phil's fingerpicking era, and I respect it! You are even more unique doing Dead covers on fretless 4s! 😎 thanks sharing your LP $ zone! Will try er out, on my fretless, too! Currently sporting Pyramid Golds but been thinking about slapping some pressurewounds on it for some zing ⚡

That's awesome to hear! I don't think I've seen you on the JB.. I will have to try it with mine, too! I reeally like how the PHILter works with my P, currently.. looking forward to a lesson with you when you can, and hopefully could pick up a little more of how you utilize the filters, as well!

Come see me with the Maydays!

Passinwind isn't wrong. The fingers on the EB-3 is probably the best Phil tone out of many great Phil tones. I built one with Dark Star pickups, but it doesn't sound the same. Fingers on the Starfire gets close and he did that a bit, too. See the Bremen '72 movie.

I'd love to! Keep me posted on Facebook..

Passinwind sure ain't wrong, just a refined taste! You're a wealth of knowledge Edwin! I'd assumed by 72 Phil was all pick, no fingers.. have never seen/can't find the Bremen 72 movie unless I'm missing it on YouTube only audio..

this is pretty much like a single channel sf-2 without the blend control, but if you have an effects loop with a blend, then it can be exactly like an sf-2. you can get low pass, high pass, band pass and notch depending on what you do with the tilt control. the manual is very helpful because the pedal is kind of complicated. i have one. it's great.
