Double Bass New! Pirastro Perpetual Double Bass strings

Perps on my Shen were a little too loose in the practice room before my gig but felt good on the gig. Gonna mess with the setup a little, I like the sound but they don’t have the same punch as my Juzek. Maybe this bass needs more tension. Might throw a set of spiros on to test that, but I’m still in love with the feel. It’s all bass specific
came back to the juzek today after a month away. The feel and sound floored me. One, I forgot out loud my juzek is, but 2 the strings felt and sounded great. Arco still bright but workable.
Back to perps on both basses. Spiros just didn’t have the air I like.
For anyone on the fence thinking about these or sticking with spiros I offer this: I have a fresh set of Spiro medium 4/4 listed in the classafields. If you buy a set of perps you have 2 weeks to test them out, and if you don’t like them we can trade.

You reminded me! Lol I totally forgot I had those.
I'll test them out sometime soon and let you know. I wish I had tried spiro solos at some point to compare but that will have to fall on someone else. One thing that is interesting to me is that the F# string is heavier than the B string (E is heavier than A) which I'm told is the issue with spiro solos where the EA are the same tension...
@damonsmith any plans to test these out or are you sticking to the spiro camp. You're the only one on here I know dedicated to Spiro Solos so you're probably the best opinion.
I used Spiro solos early on cause that's what my teacher Richard Davis used. Any of his recordings from the 70s demonstrate his sound with them - perhaps more, I lost track of him when he left NYC. I went back to them about 2 years ago when a bike accident led to some hand problems and I was looking for an lower tension string and I liked them a lot. I switched to Perps about 3 months ago cause my hand is better and just as I hoped they seem to have the playability of the solos but a little more weight in the sound.
I actually thought at one point that the perps have the low tension and bounce I would want from a solo string but with more ooomph. I'm really curious how the solo strings are. This weekend for sure. I can't say I'll stick with them as the mediums are SOO good IMO but it'll be a good experiment. After maybe I'll send em off to someone more experienced...
As my distant memory serves, regular Perpetuals are not low tension like de-tuned Spirocore Solos.

I will try your solos. I have been using spiro solos on the E, A and sometimes D with a gut G
I would try them, the strings on my bass are show no sign of dying, though. If I got a set for free I would put them on! Right now I am doing E/A weich and D/G solo.

Does anyone know if the Solo Perps -- by gauge -- are simply a bumped down standard Perp G D and A set with a higher string added, or are they completely different gauges than the standard set?

Sounds great Rick, but I can't recall a video you've posted that didn't sound great..even the EUB's (like you I've owned and subsequently sold both an Eminence and a BSX Allegro). I suspect this is due to the common denominator in all of your videos
I also have Perpetuals on both of my basses now, and the new set on the Roth is noticeably brighter than the set that I installed on the Wunderlich in July. The older set is darker, although they still have good clarity and some growl when you want it. I wonder if the fact that I rented the Wunderlich out a few times hastened this change. The guy who used it changes his Spirocores every quarter, so I assume he's pretty hard on bass strings.
