I also find the E a little tough to start. As Pirastro's description would indicate the D/G are slightly different under the bow than the E/A but not nearly as much as the A string on the Zyex set.
Volume wise they would definitely compete with Spiros or Evah's but its probably very bass dependent. The front of the note is a little less pronounced than Evahs, but theres actually quite a lot of low end.
