Double Bass New! Pirastro Perpetual Double Bass strings

As i expected, i am back to Spiro Mittels. The Perpetuals were a dream to play on my fivestring, but they did not move the top really. I had a short affair with Belcanto and moved one by one, from bottom to top, on to spiros. It felt like a sunrise!
Spiros sound really well on this dark instrument. Because they were hard to handle, I switched to Flex deluxe 6 months ago.
I have a new bow and my technique improofed during corona. I stopped using pops.
When orchestra rehearsals start, i will be ready to handle the spiros.

So what do you like instead of Pops and why?

I bought Leatherwood 40% and 20%. I use a mix of it. The point is nothing magically, i try to get used to harder rosin. Nymans is ok too. Pops has by far the best grip, but it also has a lot of noise and hiss. This is especially critical with spiros. It bites the string so hard that the attack does not match thefollowing tone. Hard to describe. I am on my way... (after 20 years of playing the bass):thumbsup:

I been digging Kolstein medium recently for bowing Spiros. Has a nice grip to it but there’s a lot more dynamic control apparent compared to when I used Pops or Kolstein soft.

Anyone out there try the solo gauge perpetuals? (tuned to solo pitches)

Somewhere a few pages back I mentioned trying orchestral gauge perpetuals and found them too low tension for my liking. Being that I don't have any gigs for the foreseeable future but have lots of shedding time I've been playing in solo tuning and I usually use permanents on top of sprios but am a little curious of how the perpetuals would be in solo tuning.

similar tension to the orchestral perps when tuned to solo tuning

feels like standard perpetuals tuned down a whole step lol. similar to spiro solos which I've now finally tried BUT the low string (E/F#) is not weak. I know @damonsmith uses spiro solos with a weich E, but I think with this set that isn't needed. Thats all i can say. The friend I gave them too loves them over the spiro lights and corelli mediums he was using before.

not sure. i don't think anyone has a set old enough to say. I got (I assume) one of the first trial sets and put them on June 13 2019 so they are coming up on a year soon. I will say they have been getting a 2nd life to them in terms of brightness coming back. at the 10 month mark I said I would most likely change them when they're a year old but now they are sounding good enough that I don't plan to change them before the end of 2020.

Maybe my ear is getting used to a darker sound, because I never kept a spiro set on for longer than a year.

i'm looking to replace my perp g string for arco playing.
any suggestions?
