Double Bass New! Pirastro Perpetual Double Bass strings

I use the Temperas with one of my basses and the Perpetuals one the other one...and I'm really satisfied about the differences...the Temperas are louder, the arco-sounds fits a lot more and the instruments fells a lot more "open"... but as I wrote in the Tempera-thread...the soundpost had to be corrected and I think, that the fingerboard needs a new dressing because of lower tension and bigger amplitudes... but this must be done in the near future anyway...
I'm thinking about a change for my second bass too, because I like the sound and the feeling of the Temperas...I've got the feeling to have found the strings fitting my basses...
at least for the moment...

The thing I like best about the Perpetuals is how they amplify... they're not as dynamic or as loud as gut on my bass acoustically but through an amp they are very impressive.
I played a three-hour jazz gig on my E.H.Roth bass which has a new set of Perpetuals with the stark G. When I got home, I played my Wunderlich bass for a while which has the regular G string.
My current feeling is that I like the original G better. The stark G is nice and I can see why some people would like it better, but it's a little harder to play, and don't think there's anything gained sound-wise. I have a double on Sunday and after that, I may replace the stark G with the regular one for a direct comparison.

You might be saving me some money, Steve.
I'd probably be pairing the Stark Perpetual G with Spiro mediums E, A, & D. I have a Zyex Medium G on there and it sounds and feels great. I was just waiting for this Zyex to die to try out the Oliv again with Spiros.
Am I confused regarding "stark Perpetual G?" My understanding is that Pirastro introduced a new G string which is thicker but not of higher tension. Is that right? The German terms "weich," "mittel," and "stark" in my understanding refer to tension, not diameter. Maybe I missed something?
I think that came from Pirastro themselves. Personally i have trouble even calling the original set "medium"...these strings are light!
This is correct. Stark is the term Pirastro is using for this string, although I would not call it a high tension string. It blends well with the rest of the set, even though I plan to go back to the regular Perpetual G. I agree that this would be a good string to add to a set of Spircocores, especially if you like a thicker G string like the one from the Zyex set.

Yeah I called it stark based on how it feels in relation to the Med set. Then I heard Adrian (Pirastro) use the term so I think it is official. I totally respect what any other bassist likes and needs from their strings but I am still gang busters on this string. It sound frickin great and feels great and has a kind of up front-ness and yet less wiry quality I just love. Adrian from Pirastro is sending me an Oliv G to directly compare. I thought it might be a good match up to go head to head and my only Oliv is too old to be a fair comparison. I'll also add the regular G perp into the mix too.
I'd like to try the same with my Spiros once the new Perpetual G becomes available. Does anyone know if it's commercially available yet?
I've been rocking the Zyex G and am pretty happy with it. I think this might be the magic set for me. Honestly, I can't tell the difference with the Zyex G and the rest Spiros. It matches pretty well. Let's put it this way, it doesn't feel any more different than the spiro G does to me. That's why I'm looking forward to checking out the Perpetual Stark G. I don't think it's available for sale yet. Check out the rest of the thread for some more info.
i've also been playing a spiro weich e a d with a zyex medium g and really loving the combo. i found out about the perpetual stark G when i asked gollihur about other thicker-diameter strings that could possibly replace the zyex g. looking for like 0.003" thicker or so for that perfect sweet spot. Yesterday I received the Stark G and OIiv G for a comparison (yes Adrian sent both a NEW stark G and Oliv G.... talk about a great company) I have had the Stark G on there for a few months and I just put the Oliv on for a fresh comparison. I really have always loved the Oliv as THE string to cut the wiry too thin sound of virtually any other set of strings (somehow with anything from spiros to Evahs to Obligatos to D'dario hybrids etc the G ALWAYS buzzes somewhere or has that zippy weird electricy sound) I have ended up with Anima G's, Garbo G's, gut G's, Oliv of course or what ever sounds least bad. The original Perpetual G is pretty damn good. I really like it, but then the new thicker stark really set my sails. I love it. No wirey buzz no electricy whine. The stark G sounds like a steel string but with most of the properties of an Oliv. (but with more sustain and ping and bite especially up high) Within one day of putting back on an Oliv (after a few years) I am reminded of why I love the Oliv (it is like the opposite of a perp stark G, that is it is a gut string that has many characteristics of a steel string...super nice combo)
But my first impression is (and I will write again after a few weeks) is that I am going to play this Stark G forever. I already miss the ping of it. The way it sounds in thumb position is stellar. Also it seems more robust (I am afraid already to take the Oliv off for fear of damaging it, where the stark G feels super robust) Still the Oliv is crazy good, a little more likely to buzz, definitely lower tension (has somewhat of that Scott LaFaro sound...but fundamental but still quick)
But I think the Stark G is modern string technology at its best....

I changed my perps after 18 months of light use. I noticed a huge difference. I will never again use them for more than a year! Especially in thumb position they are so lively and fresh!!
Yeah New perps are my favorites. Reminds me of Reid's sound on early Bad Plus.
I think stark G of most any flavor is a good bet. Currently, I'm loving the Passione stark G over spiro S42 mitts bottom three. I have not tried, but many players like Spiro S42 stark G. The entire stark set of Flexocore(92) is a fave. The Dominant G could be classified in the stark category, and is a great G-string both pizz and arco. Hell, I've even pulled out my Innovation Polychrome G and called it my poor-man's Olive G over helicore hybrids.

Perps (D G)are a soo much easier to play than mittels!! It is a miracle why they sound so grown up.
