New PJ Mustang at Summer NAMM

Only thing i regret it's the color options, i would appreciate a Sunburst or a Black PJ Mustang, maybe Fender are going to produce these color options in near future. I don't understand why they push these colors (White, Red, Sonic Blue) as something only for Young guys or beginners, i bet many experienced bassists would enjoy a high quality short scale with classic colors like Sunburst, maybe with a tortoise pickguard! I think there are many out there wishing a higher quality short scale like this new Mustang, since the Squier Jaguar SS is good but seems cheaply built (ah, okay, it is also cheaply priced).
As for the pickup configuration, i think it's ok, i would swap the mexican pickups with a couple of Seymour Duncan, SPB-2 and SJB-2B, warm punchy P-tone and a much easier and faster neck!

I'm not exactly young (65) or a beginner since I bought my first bass in 67'. But if they were only released in black and burst I wouldn't even think of getting one. Hate both colors and as soon as I get one in those colors the sander comes out followed by the spray paint. Have thought of one of the Guild M-85 but since they only come in black I can't justify a $1,300 bass then more to refinish it to a real color.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. Any kind of burst is a last resort for me; I'm just not a big fan. Black is okay (I have two black basses), but I happen to like white, red, blue, natural, and a whole slew of colors more than sunburst and black.

I do have a couple of black basses and two burst. Black Bronco and a no name 80s that are both in pieces awaiting rebuilds. Burst Hofner violin and a Gretsch 2224 that I probably will refinish at some point. Also one of the Gibson short run short scale T-Birds. Love the bass, hate the matte black finish. Want to have it professionally redone in Polaris White since when it's finished I want it perfect.

Do they make every one of their products in burst black and white beacuse they're so popular? Or are they the most popular because they make every one of their products in burst, black and white? Gotta get the cause and effect right.

Best Selling, I guess:

The email I got was similar to this, without the coupon stuff:
Fender coupon deals - Can You Guess Our Three Most Popular Finishes?

And from Fender's site, they don't really spell them out except to say they're the best selling finishes:
Invalid Link Removed

I suppose they could make a certain number of basses in each finish and see which one sells out first.
Then make more of that finish.

Or they could be proactive like D'Addario and send out surveys about their products. They sent me one for guitar strap designs with simple choices: "I would buy this", "I can see why someone would buy this", and "No one would buy this".

i inquired to fender about the mustang vintage white bass on their site. looking for a good short scale fender for my son. they referred me to sam ash...a local sam ash then called me and said that mustang was discontinued but told me they are coming out with this mustang pj bass in october retailing around $600.

just thought i'd share that....and also if anyone wants to sell their old mustang or modern player short scale...i'm interested :D

Well, if Fender say that their most popular finishes are Sunburst, White, and Black, i don't understand why they do not produce this new Mustang bass also in Sunburst finish and in Black finish.
One wonders sometimes about Fender marketing strategies!
