I like this bass and I like the fact that Gibson is producing some more short scales! No, they're not for everyone, but some players really like the feel and the thump that they produce. I am in the market for a good short scale right now because I am having some problems with my hands, but there are not tons of options out there (certainly much less so than 34" scale).
As far as this model goes, I'll admit that the street price of $1,229 is WAY too much. On the positive side, however, this bass will probably feel better on the strap than, say, the SG. The strap button is placed on the upper bout, instead of on the back of the body, so it will have better balance and resist rolling forward away from the bassist. I think this will make it a more comfortable player.
I know I am in the minority here, but I think the blue color is a nice change. It is certainly unique in a world of 3-Tone Sunburst J and P basses. Honestly, I like being a little different. Conformity is not always my thing.
At the end of the day, the audience isn't looking at me anyway. They're looking at my lead singer. Unless you are in a specific tribute band setting, the vast majority of audience members don't care one bit what kind or color of bass you play. Walk out with a bass shaped like a dog turd and made of bamboo and most people will go "whatever" provided it sounds good.
Anyway, I like it. I may have to try it out once it's available. Maybe it will be a match.
