To my ear, the single coil has more growl, the split has mellower tone.

This is something people have been trying to do for 50 years.

The single coil is rounder and deeper sounding.

The split coil is midrangy and cutting.

The single coil is the Thump King, while the split coil rules the mix.

I own both, and love 'em both.
