New TC Elec. BH550 & 800

What I don't quite get is why the people who are not interested in the amps in question insist to hammer their negativity repeatedly into a thread like this. If I should enter every thread of products that I choose not to buy and argue vigorously my arguments against the product, what would that achieve? We all have different preferences which makes us weigh the properties of products differently.

About this power rating issue: It is something that is known. For some this is a deal breaker, for others it is not.

Me? For me the proof of the pudding is in the eating. I would try it before I buy it. It's as simple as that. But I love the enthusiasm about a new product.

Fair enough about the needless bashing, but how do you try an amp at a gig, or at gig volume before you buy ? A lot of us depend on honest power ratings as a guide to how an amp will keep up on/at a live performance... I know I can't crank an 800w amp in store around here or I'll be told to get out...

Oh well. Like I said: We all know about the TC Electronic "power rating" of amplifiers, and some of us use them anyway. SPL (sound pressure level) is a result of many things, where power measured/given in continuous/RMS/peak/rated Watt at some given/hidden distortion percentage is just one.

Personally I find the cab's ability to move air to be a more important factor than max power. Usually, the cab start to move into inlinear territory before you reach the max power of the amp (or the cab). The sensitivity of the cabinet is also a very important factor (a 250W amp into a 100dB sensitivity cab can be louder than a 750W amp into a 95dB sensitivity cab). But that is just me.

Tone and useability are more important to me than power. Those 3dB in difference between 250W and 500W is not so important to me, as I never crank the amp. The TC BH250 keeps up nicely with the drummer on stage. DI out to PA takes care of the power to the people.

Should we get back to talking about what we know about BH550 and BH800, and leave the "what's the REAL power"-speculations for later when someone actually tests the things?

I thought we were talking about amps not cabs, If I I am buying an amp, I know the sensitivity of my cabs, it's the amps rating I need to know to work out, even roughly, how loud it's going to get... and that's why SPL is a good measure for speakers and not amps.. i.e. Speaker A can produce an SPL of 90dB @ 1watt @ 1kHz @1 meter... Simple... Until 1 TC watt is actually .002 watts RMS.

Effective or perceived loudness is not SPL, and RMS power into a given load is actually a figure regardless of distortion figures, hidden or otherwise... It's what we have used to measure output power for many many years... Until recently in MI those figures have mostly been reliable... It's the car stereo and budget home audio world that fudges the numbers or the measure (like PMPO) and ruined it as a reliable value... And I don't recall many other amps in the 20+ years of playing live that were so grossly over rated due to tricks... But I guess it's a brave new world if we are going to accept that kind of behaviour from MI amp manufacturers... I personally would not encourage that we do...

I don't hold anything against anyone who likes what they like, I do get annoyed when people say it doesn't matter if said company makes a complete fabrication of facts and tries to compete unfairly against honest rated equipment makers... and dishonestly takes the hard earned cash of hard working musicians. If you buy an amp to practice at home at low levels you may not care, but if you make your living from gigging, you don't want to get ripped off by dishonest ratings and figures that people have used for many years to approximate an amps capabilities...

TCE makes a phenomenal product that performs up to my standards. It has the feature set I'm looking for, the power I need, the form factor I like and the most flexibility in EQ of any amp I've tried. Edit: The point, to answer your question, is to let people know who are not technically minded or aware that TC has recently used baloney figures to sell their amps to the ignorant (not a bad word in itself) or uneducated that may mistake 750 TC watts, with the type that most every other manufacturer uses in the industry... The majority that care seemed pretty annoyed with TC for that...

Nothing in my post was untrue. And yes totes is slang for totally. Slang is widely accepted on the internet in 2014.

The topic of the thread wasn't "why can't I find more dead horse beaters to slag on TC Electronic". At least I didn't see that on my phone. Maybe it is there on PC?

Looks cool. I'm still happy with my RH750, and am not willing to lose the eq presets to get one of these, but still. Looks great!

As for power - there's no mention of APM (Active Power Management) in the BH series heads, that's for the
RH heads only it appears. No reason these shouldn't put out the advertised power.

The only party at fault for that, is TCE. When a company ruins their reputation, gets called out on it, then continues to make the same claims, they should expect no less. TCE continues to make their [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. The could publish real specs, and this would go away.

Back to the topic: I am sad to not see tubetone. I know it can be a cheesy digital effect but a little really adds what I personally look for. I have a TC Electronic BG500 (The one everyone hated from guitar center) and absolutely love it. I wish it was still around.

When you say, many posts... Do you mean two (including this thread) ? I think you might have me confused with someone else... I never said I wouldn't buy a TC amp for the record.

Furthermore, you say that this is about amps, not cabs. That is like saying a discussion about driving is about cars, not roads. So take your 500+ HP Ferrari and drive it through a corn field and see if you manage to move very far.

What an amp is capable of is largely dependant on what you hook it up to. What an amp is, is defined by a lot of properties, not just a power spec. Why is it so hard to accept that others like TC Electronic amps for what they are, regardless of specs on paper?
