I'm currently using my dad's 1970's Lidovox amp which I've learned is really a Traynor? It's for Accordian/Organ (Bass/Treble) with 3 inputs, 2 speakers, rated at 150W.

I have my SX bass plugged into it and keep the volume at '2'. It hums when I turn the volume up which is a bit annoying. As a practice home amp it's sufficient.

But I may end up jamming with the same guy I play drums with (he's on guitar/vocals) and was thinking of getting a 'real' bass amp later this year that can match with his Marshall amp.

Initially I was looking at the Ashdown EB 12-180 (or the bigger EB 15-180) costing $349.00 and $389.00 (Cdn) respectively.

But now I see the Traynor DynaBass 200, and from the glowing reviews I'm thinking of that model as well (or the 200T). What's the difference between a 1x15 and a 2x10 speaker setup?

Has anyone tried both the Ashdown and Traynor's? Are there other amps I should look at in that power/price range? It could be a combo or head/cabinet setup, and weight is not an issue. I'd put my price ceiling at $500 (less is better).

The Dynabass 200 is a good amp. It puts out a lot of sound for its power and you can run an extension cabinet if needed. I used the earlier Yorkville Sound XM200 C with 2x10's for a year and it was excellent for small clubs with a fairly loud trio. The Traynor Dynabass is even better. In that amp I prefer the 2x10. It seems to cut through the racket a bit better than the 1x15' does. But both are good.

I haven't tried the Ashdown you mentioned, only the much more expensive earlier Ashdown models. They were good amps too, but pricey.

The Dynabass 200 is made in Canada. The quality is very good, customer service also good and it has an excellent warranty which you'll likely not need to use. They're a reliable, well constructed amp. Lots of working musicians playing them.

What '62 said. My XM200 2x10 with the 1 x15 ex. cab now stays in the practice space but it is still my favourite rig.

I'd recommend the 2 x10 config. It is punchier and a bit louder I think than the 1 x 15. Then you can always add the 1 x 15 cab for the ulitmate sound.

Highly recommended.

Looks like I won't be needing that bass amp after all. I went to jam with my friend to do some cover songs and some free form jamming. He took a look at the old Lidovox amp and adjusted some stuff and the thing works great. It actually works really well as a bass amp; no frills, just straight clean volume.

But that's not the good part. We went downstairs to warm up for our jamm and he revealed a new looking Yorkville Bassmaster xm100 amp. He just bought it used and placed it in our jamm space for when I'm up to speed on the bass and we can jamm, just bass and guitar (or drums). We plugged in my SX and the sound was excellent with a serious growl. It was barely at half volume and that was seriously loud for our purposes.

You can check back on the Yorkville threads and find lots about the Yorkville XM200 which is basically the same amp. The new Traynor Dynabass 200 supposedly sounds even better. I highly recommend it. By itself it'll handle a small club and do even better with an extension cabinet.

I'm torn between ordering a DB200T and getting an Acoustic B200H head to use with my Avatar 212. I play small semi-acoustic gigs and then in a full rock/blues band (200 watts is enough, I like classic rock tone with my Precision or Ric)

Problem - I currently have a Yorkville XM50 for small acoustic gigs and love it. My first amp was a very basic Traynor that still pumps it out after 25 years. I studied at U of T, so I'm fond of many things Canadian. However, the Acoustic head is getting rave reviews and it's very affordable. I could drive 10 minutes and have it in my hands.

I guess I'm asking you to sell me on the Traynor.

Until I actually get a chance to try one of the new Acoustic amps, I can't say anything good or bad about it. I've noticed a lot of rave reviews from others but I don't know how discerning these guys are. The real test for me would be in a live setting and it would have to be able to stand up to constant gigging. I know the Traynor can. The Acoustic is new, made overseas and basically untested and that would scare me off.

Also, I'm old enough to have owned and played the original Acoustic amps in a professional setting. They were loud. Sometimes unreliable. Not my favourite sound but rather harsh sounding. But, they were loud and that counted for a lot back then.

The new Acoustics have the same look but are a different design. They're not the same amp. They could be better or worse than the original. I think a lot of the raves come from the look of the amp. I've noticed that many of the prople who are raving about this amp and the look have never played the original. There seems to be a certain mystique surrounding the things.

Best thing is--go out and play one. Take it home on whatever trial period you can arrange and try it out on a gig. Really give it a workout. Then you can decide better.

You already know how the little XM50C sounds (I have one myself) The Dynabass sounds as good, is more flexible and much louder. It's very reliable. It has a great 2 years, even if you break it warranty.

The XM100C is the best medium gig combo money you'll ever spend. Mine was $379. It does not have a tweeter ! YEA!!! It's super clean signal w/ a DI balanced out, and blew my ampeg B100R out the door. Good solid little amp w/ good solid bass tone. I use a 65 precision w/ flats, and a Victor Bailey Jazz w/ rounds. Both sound tremendous. My big rig is Eden-BagEnd, my mini or upright rig is GK MB150E....I know tone. Yorkville=great product. ps; their powered mixer PA"s kick serious butt as well.

How is the DB 200T selling and how are the reviews? I can't seem to get much info about this combo but I'm still interested.

I like it, it also can be tilted back or sit upright. It's a lot lighter than the XM200T, and the handles are on the sides, rather than one single handle on the top like the previous XM model.

Well, it can...but hold on until the new year...I mentioned a new combo that's small, lightweight, yet powerful. It's just making it's final QC run and should be available early January...nuff said for now!

Back to the DB200...definitely fits the situation you're describing, myself, I prefer something I can lug single handed, like the aforementioned new product.
