New unexpected bass day: fender precision

That bass looks great! I'm a sucker for Lake Placid Blue, though I don't own a single bass or guitar in that color.

I like tort on some finishes, but LPB is not one of them. You made the right decision.

hows the neck? i cant get around the wide neck on those basses. One of the reasons I sold my road worn p

the neck is wider than i'm usually comfortable with but i can work with it. i've had a road worn p and classic 50s lacquer p and even though they are supposed to be the same width, the american original doesn't feel as wide. either i've gotten used to it in the last few years or it's thinner front to back or it's mind games.

i like it. i have fralin 10% over and a 76 precision which i like. also many yamaha reverse p pickups. this one is probably the best for that motown and funk sound. maybe it works well for gritty rock with a pick too, haven't gotten there yet. been playing it finger style only so far.

Interesting. I just replaced the non stock "Original" pickup on my 2008 AmStd Pbass with a PV63 for reggae-dub, with Dunlop flats. Fat sound. By the way, when I bought this Olympic White Pbass in 2009 I immediately replaced the stock tort pick guard with a white one

one of the best sounding precisions i've played. it's a nice companion for my 76 precision. the 76 lows are not as deep and has a mellower attack from the american original. the AO has a smooth, kind of mature tone that transitions cleanly from note to note. it's the sound i expect when i hear a p bass. maybe it's all in the strings.

it also looks darker and more metallic in different light. and i love how dark the fretboard wood is.

i think LPB is one of the tougher colors to nail down. So many different degrees, also natural aging. This example of the old P laying in the case is one of my favorite finishes and was my reference for my MJT LPB P

american vintage turned into american original in 2018. i'm not sure if the american vintage line descended from the fullerton reissues. also these american originals might not be faithful enough to be called reissues. there are some details that aren't entirely accurate such as headstock logos, hardware (those two especially on the jazz basses), pickups, body wood, pickguards, cases, etc (that's pretty much the whole thing now). that may be why it's a generalized american original 60s precision now and not a specific year.

Trying to think of colour I would rather watch age than Lake Placid Blue. Shell Pink, in contrast, never seems to go anywhere especially tasty. But LPB, it's just going to be one beautiful shade after another, no?

there must be a lake placid blue club somewhere on talkbass. it's gotta be one of the most interesting and diversely aging colors. sonic blue, ocean turquoise, surf green, sherwood green, olympic white too. hopefully others will chime in. maybe i'll make a flow chart of the original fender custom colors and all the subsequent colors that seem to be aged variations of them. buttercream, vintage white, tidepool, blue agave, miami blue...

The LP jazz look more beautiful with tort guard especially matching headstock one.

Mint guard on you AO 60P just look like previous blue Mim Std P......

Lake Placid Blue Precisions originally came with white pickguards back in the day. My theory is that tortoise guards were put on LPB's by shops after the fact. I love tortoise shell guards on SB and white basses too.
That bass looks great.
