New Zoom B3 has arrived!!!!

Got mine last week. I dig it. Glad I read through the postings. I use the SVT for an EQ, found a great delay, love the phase and the tuner works great. All in all a great multi to use for bass. I need to do some more editing and then I'll be set.

To my knowledge it is the same as the G3; NOT true bypass. I believe the G3 has a well designed buffer system though and therefore the whole "tone suck" arguement is pretty limited with these units. DSP buffering will allow spillover of effects, which is desirable for some people. Things like delay's continue after the effect has been turned off, which is something you don't typically get with a true bypass design. Your signal will fail shut though in the event of major issue (OS crash, power, nuclear explosion, lunar eclipse).

The older Zoom always had the A/D converters running and really bugged me. I saw another thread and they mentioned a Clean patch could be setup. But still at best there's still is going to be that millisec~ delay always running.

I can tell you that I have not noticed any audible difference with the G3 (I have not picked up a B3 yet). I've been using the G3 for about a year and done several A/B tests for tone loss, artifacts, etc., both live and recording.

Anyone contact Samson/Zoom to confirm whether there will be an upgrade to the software of the B3, as was done with the G3?

Just curious, i've seen speculation but no actual comments from the manufacturers.

(There's not many there at all.)

I realise there are a few people with some patch samples uploaded to their various individual webspaces, (eg Chris Graham, Crystalman85, etc.) but is there a place online where a substantial library of them is held and being added to by everyone?

If not then its a real shame.
If I knew how I'd set one up myself.

does anyone use a boss fs5u to momentary use the effects? You can assign effect 1-2-3 to go on or off with a footswitch, altho the manual states it's only bypass all or tap tempo.

I tried a piano sustain pedal and it did work with tap and bypass, but it wouldn't momentary switch the effects on or off..

Did anyone tried this out? I'd love for a couple of effects to be momentary instead of the latched type the onboardfootswitches deliver.

Oh nevermind, when you choose effect 1 2 or 3 then you'll get a set of options to control with a footswitch, it's not for the effect itself....

does anyone know a workaround for this? To momentarily activate effects?

I have a question about storing patches.

I come from using the 2.1, where you can store whatever you want in banks A-D, secure in the knowledge that if you overwrite one of the factory patches and you want it back you can drag it out of the read-only locations 00-39.

Looking at the B3 manual I can't see how you can ever retrieve a factory patch if you store one of your own patches on top of it.

For example if I store my patch in J1, can I ever get back the factory patch that was originally in J1? This was super easy with the 2.1.

Grateful for any advice on this, thanks!

A millisecond delay is equivalent to having your ear one foot from a sound source. (That's physics, and not open to debate, incidentally.)

In other words, if you're over 4 feet tall, you''ll always have a 3 millisecond delay when using an amp on the floor... assuming you're standing right next to it.

If you're over 4 feet tall, and not standing with your leg against your amp all night at a gig, you're introducing even more delay into what you hear. That's physics.

Ultimate tone and minimization of delay, I suppose, would require one to have one's amp right next to one's head. If you don't play that way, then you are likely able to adapt to a millisecond more. Even washtub bass players manage to do this, so hopefully you all have what it takes to make it work.

Mike,

If you back up the factory ones on your computer before you overwrite them you can upload them back onto the B3 when are where you want to.

Another option might be to (I guess) push the factory patches you want to keep back in the bank (say load J bank up with them as storage) , ie re-arrange them.
You can then copy them and put them back in the same place the original ones were and tweak them as much as you like.

I've found that at least half of the factory patches are not to my taste. I'd never use them. I have been happily over-writing them.

Thanks for the suggestion, and I did happen to notice the factory reset option in the manual, but doing this, while certainly restoring the factory presets, would also clobber the patches I've made myself.

Although more of a pest than the 2.1's method, backing up and selectively restoring seems to be the only way to do it. And bad luck if you're at a gig and don't have your laptop handy.

Still a nice piece of kit.
