New: Zoom B3n Multi-Effects

Apologies if this is a repeated question dealt with elsewhere here. The first 68 pages had 1 or 2 references without detail, I gave and skipped to the end to ask.
Does the B3n work effectively without an amp plugged directly into the mixer through a DI?
Are there any issues, comments or tips regarding doing this?
Yes, it does. I don't have any tips myself though.

That's how I've been using mine. No issues thus far, just plug it in and go.

No issue. I've been using my B3n on a pedalboard together with a wireless
transceiver at front and a DI box at the end in the last few years. Since most venue I played in quite recent years didn't provide any bass amp, the signal goes from my DI box straight to the house/venue mixing board.

Does the B3n have balanced out? As in TRS to XLR would work?
Nope. You'll need an external DI box.

Good question. The old B3 had an XLR out
Could one use the Left jack as a TRS? Don't know.

Not sure I understand your question, but if you're asking if this signal chain will work, the answer is yes, definitely:

Bass > B3n > DI > snake > Mixer
Just like any other normal stage connection, there's no provision for monitoring here.

In this scenario, it would be up to FOH to provide you with foldback, whether it's from wedges, IEM's off an Aviom network, or ???

Yes. I have used the B3n plugged into a DI pedal, a 1st generation SansAmp with it turned off in my case, then directly into the house speakers and it sounded great.

I think that this is the most compelling argument for using a modeller.

As a gigging bassist, when I'm surrounded by great musicians and standing in front of a great head and cab combo, I never find myself thinking "gee, I wish I had an XXX":
  • For live music in front of a small audience, great amp > room > audience = bliss!
  • The same scenario scales nicely as the audience grows: great amp > mic > sound guy > FOH installation > acoustics > audience = bliss.
It really is that simple.

Where the B3n comes into it's own, is when you don't have access to all the pieces that make live performance easy.

No amps allowed, and the sound person isn't able to craft a good bass tone from a raw DI feed? No problem.

To be fair, the tones coming from the B3n aren't as detailed and pristine as the ones you could get from a Kemper or a Helix. But unless you're on a world or at least a major regional tour, and given that a growing number of bassists are using dead flats with the tone rolled off, does that even matter?

After a few trouble free years with the B1Xon I decided to upgrade to the B3n. I was quite impressed till I tried to use the drum tracks. There were,nt any. No matter what I did, factory reset, update firmware, nothing. As I live in Greece this is going to be quite expensive to post back to the UK.
Do I want to take a chance on a replacement unit? No thanks I cant afford the postage. Do I wish these items were properly quality checked before they were sent out? dead right I do. Bloody internet shopping Grrrrrr.

If you purchased *new* from a reliable vendor, you should contact them about the problem. In most common cases, they will issue you a call tag so that you don't have to pay postage for a defective unit. If they won't, then I would definitely make it known that they aren't taking care of you. Most reputable vendors will help you out somehow, and if not, issue you a full refund.

Hi.

You have insert the drums in a new patch, they are like an effect. It's next to the loop "effects". Don't know if you already checked.

If they are not there, connect the B3N to the computer and update the effects that are on the website.

Hope it helps!

How is the sound quality of the B3n vs the b1Xon compare?
I feel like I'm in the minority here but after owning the ms60-b, b1on, and the B3n, the B3n was my favorite soundwise. I felt like the overdriven/distortions in the B3n were vastly improved. To my ears at least. Fuzz, still not amazing.
The B3n still has its shortcomings but I love it. The other two zoom devices have been moved on.
The b1on was a great practice tool, but didn't love it in a jamming/gig situation.

In total agreement with this sentiment. I've never really been a "fuzz" guy either, but employ a good amount of grit and overdrive on a regular basis, with it sometimes being the critical core of my sound. I owned both the B3 and B1on and eventually moved them along.
