New: Zoom B3n Multi-Effects

Hi everybody, I also posted this in the GK Plex thread.

So I tried to rearrange my signal path and power supplies today and I noticed something. When the Zoom B3n is put in front of the GK Plex, not in the effects loop, and the bass into the Zoom, a very harsh noise is introduced. Whether or not the Plex's power supply is isolated, the noise is still there. But this doesn't occur when the Zoom B3n is in the effects loop.

Just a heads up. I don't think this is the B3n's problems, as multi-effects really go along and don't with certain pedals as well.

What kind of noise? Can you record a sample?

I got my G5n and started writing patches for guitar. First one RC Boost>Twin>2x12 Cabinet>Volume Pedal> Spring Reverb. A Twin with a boost in front and a volume pedal. Went to add a Phase Shifter, no more memory. So I can either use this as an amp sim OR a multi-effect unit. Deeply disappointed. ***? I don't think I'm asking too much. Most people use an amp and a couple of effects. I'm pissed!

Something is not right there as the total effect processing power used by these 6 effects is 74% in 7 slots.
  1. RC Boost 15
  2. Fender Twin 30
  3. Cab 9
  4. Volume Pedal 4
  5. Spring Verb 9
  6. Phaser 7
Did you upgrade the firmware to 2.0?

Yes, even using the FD spring, which is a hit to cpu of 25, I've just recreated this patch adding the Stone Phaser (8 unit cpu) with no trouble.
In fact, I also just added the Kick Flanger (2 slots) to fill the max number of slots (9).

Something not right...I'd suspect old firmware. I'm on 2.0

Would you like me to post a photo, for posterity?

Picture or it didn't happen! :D

LOL

So it looks like I'm going to have to hang on to my 60b till they come out with the AcBsPre for the B3n. That HPF has become invaluable.
Johno!

You can catch ZOOM on FaceBook, and every so often they'll directly acknowledge and answer questions if they can. But you may just as likely get a "...hmmmmm..." out of them, too.

Updated to V2.0 Definitely more fire power. Still not ideal but the models sound great and the price is right. Considering going Fractal.

Cool. Big league sound and features over in Fractal Land. I move my AxeFxII along to a guitarist/sound engineer friend since he needed a new live rig and it's just an incredible piece of processing gear for guitar, and pretty awesome for bass, too. @Selta is your man for all things Fractal Audio these days. He started a thread here in the Effects Forum just for their gear. The AxeFxII can keep your mind and ears busy and amused for years....literally.

The only thing I can say about Fractal products is that they haven't dedicated a whole lot of resources to bass-specific features, but that doesn't make it any less worthy for bass. My personal needs for live effects and modeling have become fewer and fewer, so the cost and sophistication of Fractal gear is slightly overkill for my purposes. Otherwise, I'd gladly own and use their stuff again, no question. Great, great products.

Yes, I was close to preordering and putting my ms60b and Vt bass up for sale to cover most of the cost, but the hpf is invaluable for me as well, especially when using the bass microsynth. Hpf on 7 with the detune chorus, noise gate, and ensemble is amazing after the microsynth, without the hpf it has so much low end that through a big pa it is uncontrollable.

Honestly though I really don't have any issues with the ms60b sound. At first I wasnt digging it but after living with it I've mostly figured out what can be pushed and what can't. And I use a compressor pedal, the compressors in the zoom were causing a lot of noise because they are at the end of the chain.

Anyway, I'm sure I'll get the b3n at some point in the near future but not just yet. I think hpf is something that you never know you need until you use it, then without it you realize how much of a good difference it makes.
