I've sort of felt this way as time goes on. Tomlin inherited a solid SB winning team, and has just ridden that since he got the job. Along the way, key members of that SB winning team have left and he has replaced them with big mouth trash talkers and failed to develop any talent for the most part. A few high draft picks have turned out to be good, but where is the depth? A few busts in the draft on defense for sure. Where are the quality guys? Where is the continuity and leadership in the locker room? I think bringing Foote back was him grasping at straws to get that.

Troy and Kiesel are about to retire, and I think that is when you are really going to see this team go to the dogs. I don't think Tomlin is terrible, but I don't think he is nearly as good of a coach as he looks on paper. That team coached itself for a couple years post-Cowher. I haven't even mentioned the work Lebeau did with that defense, no credit for Tomlin there.

The Lions? I'm still not sure what to make of them. They dominated a playoff team yesterday and stopped one of the best running games in the league, while they seemingly moved the ball at will. But still, too many penalties and boneheaded plays, and have you ever seen a team with 4 TD's called back in a game still win?

Go ahead; I thought I they'd be better than they were yesterday. I don't think it's how the whole season will go, but that was a depressing way to start the season. If Weeden can be around a QB rating of 80 for the season I would be reasonably happy. I know he didn't approach that yesterday, but I doubt he will continue to play like that.

Meanwhile, I kind of hate the 49ers now.

I just saw a Derek Anderson-esque performance yesterday. Too many of his tosses needed a stretched out WR to snag, and he's gonna get someone destroyed doing that. I had them picked to go 6-10, with some lucky bounces. the play calling yesterday was Shurmur-like. where the heck is this vaunted Norv Turner deep ball offense?

I agree that even a lot of the completions required too many adjustments by the receivers. The DA comparison is strange since he was pretty inaccurate at Oregon State but Weeden was really accurate at Oklahoma State (i.e. Anderson has never been accurate). But I get where you're coming from.

I was disappointed by the game plan too. I kind of wish I was a fly on the wall to know what the root causes were. Is Weeden really that bad? Did Cousins and Schwartz destroy the ability to do much of anything downfield? Was Richardson hurt or sick or something? I am not sad that Shurmur is gone, but I had hoped for more creativity and better use of the personnel.

Yeah, that game was something. Between the dropped punt and the Broncos' fumble on the 1-yard line, it was just a couple of plays away from being a 56-14 blowout. That's the defending Superbowl champs vs. a team with a 37 year old QB.

So what's eberyone's prdcition for the Eagles - 'Skins game tonight? Is RG III ready?

I was doing a comparison of what we saw in Cleveland of Weeden and Anderson. (I agree BW was accurate at OSU, but they ran a WIDE open style of offense.) The DA-esque short fastballs and stretching out the WRs are my major concern.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Chip Kelly can do in the NFL and whether or not his fast game plan will work in the pros.

I'm not a fan of either team, but I do like RG III and hope that he does well. I also really hope that the 'skins do something about their field before RG III has a career-ending injury.

Defensive penalties or offensive?

I didn't see any of the game, but that was a weird stat line for Bruno Mars: 300+ passing yards and 1 TD. I feel like he's usually hyper efficient on yardage, but with more touchdowns. Admittedly, that is with watching very few of the Seahawks games.

They had penalties for both offense and defense. Last year the offense was the main penalty crew. Now it's both.

It was a weird game. Wilson is usually very effecient at moving the ball downfield, but the Panther's defense did a great job of keeping us out of the endzone. Their defense also shut down Lynch, which is no easy task.

I expect Carolina to do very well this year. Their defense was really tight and Newton didn't go into "mistake mode" as I've seen him do before under pressure. He looks much more mature and capable this year.

It was another messy game among several yesterday including (especially) the Dallas - NY match.
