NFL Week #1

The NFL can't step in and pay a college student. Even suggesting such is flawed. It's not their issue nor should they get involved in that aspect. The colleges make millions off of student athletes, if anyone is to start a monetary stipend to play in collegiate sports it should come from them.

The players and coaches can always find employment elsewhere. It's always been thus. Goodell is taking an active hand, because frankly, it needs to be taken. The times have changed and the industry that is the NFL is a BILLION dollar company. He is doing the unthinkable in requiring them to behave as such.

I find it humorous that folks who work daily in a job that dictates what you wear, when you come and go and how you must act react so vehemently to Goodell when all he is doing is taking a standard corporate model and implementing it. I've worked 14 years in corporate upper management and recently 5 years in a non profit. You know what? The rules, are pretty stinkin' similar.

By the way Ohio banned him for 5 YEARS ... not games.

I'm guessing he's fine with making several 100k or more a year as opposed to working at Starbucks...

Not so fast with Pryor. Goodell banned Pryor before he even signed a contract, before he was even drafted by an NFL team. Because the NFL is unique and a monopoly, there isn't a reasonable way to compare this to the rest of us. To try...could <insert corporation name here> impose a monetary fan on a new hire if they found out he had been suspended or expelled from his university for cheating on a test? Or how about this...I get in trouble at my job and my employer suspends me one week. I decide to quit and go to work across the street, what business would that employer have suspending me for a week based on what I did at the other joint? I know, I know, there are loopholes in the ideas, but there has to be just because the NFL is much different.

I think the PCP is a good idea, but a joke how it is enforced. Even more of a joke for Goodell to now enforce NCAA penalties on prospective employees. Be a part of the NCAA or don't.

Ohio banned who for five years?

Lions had to play that game without their starting QB too, so what, almost beat em the first time that way too. How did Rodgers get the concussion in the middle of the game? Wasn't it from the inferior Lions D-line beating the superior Packers O-line repeatedly? It's cool, fortunately for you, your GM and Head Coach get it, they drafted O-line along with the Bears cause they saw what they would be facing against the Lions twice a year.

Packers o-line was not superior last year and won't be this year.

This is pretty much covered by the whole "integrity of the game" thing. Commissioners (as long as the owners don't fire them and the labor contract doesn't prevent it) can do basically ANYTHING to protect the "integrity of the game".

No one is being punished before they are even NFL employees.

Should they choose not to go to work for the NFL, they will never be punished.

Now, they ARE being punished for actions before they were employees... just like players who fail the drug test at the Combine before the draft.

I disagree.

I've seen Harrison make TONS of egregious illegal hits.

I've seen Suh make one - the Jake Delhomme one in the preseason last year. The others he's gotten tagged with, weren't.

The Jay Cutler "Forearm to the back of the helmet" wasn't a forearm, and it didn't hit the helmet.

The Marion Barber horsecollar.... that wasn't a horsecollar but a perfectly legal tackle by the hair.

...and this last one was a run of the mill late hit that looked bad because Dalton's helmet came off.

Now - over time, Suh may catch Harrison... but at this point it ain't close.

I get that Goodell *can* do it and he can do whatever he wants. He can suspend me for one time I violated his PCP.

Pryor received a five game suspension, that is punishment before he becomes an NFL player if he chose to do so. The NFL has clear rules about substance abuse. This situation is different. He didn't break any NFL rules. Did he break the PCP? Maybe, but how can he be held to a standard of contact when he doesn't even work for that company? Goodell just turned his head the other way on all those guys who violated the PCP during the lockout, but he can apply it to Pryor before he was even eligible to be an NFL player?

Goodell had an interview on Mike and Mike a few days ago and addressed the issue. Greeny has serious issues with it, like you Mike. Goodell saw it as a punishment for Pryor not becoming eligible for the draft, and using the supplemental draft as a way to dodge the suspension. If Pryor had declared himself eligible for the NFL draft, I'm not certain what Goodell would have done then, but it seems likely it would have been considered differently.

A few posts up you make valid arguments that I'm still considering Mike :) I certainly see where you're coming from.

I mean really, did Goodell and the NFL review the NCAA report on the matter and decide on the appropriate punishment, or did Goodell read the ESPN stories like the rest of us and figure "oh hey, I'll ban Pryor five games since that is what Ohio State was going to do"? Again, he's a fool who heeds to be relieved of his duties.

How's this sound: eliminate college football athletic scholarships, let the NFL draft players out of high school, and the team that drafts them can pay the bill for the "college experience". That eliminates the NCAA infractions for taking stuff. Still leaves walk-ons a chance to make the team, gives the students a team to root for, let's the school make money on the team. I'm a genius, a mad genius.

It is pretty surprising. If he is out any extended time the Colts chances are not that good to be division champs. So much of that offense relied on Peytons mad genius at the line of scrimmage... and Kerry, although a wily vet who has seen it all, in ill prepared to be that guy. Addai better be able to carry the load and stay healthy. Frankly I don't see that happening either.

I've got a horrible feeling that the Cowboys are gonna bring the suck this year. Big time. They are way younger, but that may translate into getting the QB killed again. The worst defense in team history doesn't look any better at all. Depth at receiver doesn't exist. we're carrying 2 kickers (that means you have zero kickers).
