NFL Week #7

Thanks for the clarification, Chris. I didn't realize the pads had so much give. Wasn't a tackler involved in a scary injury a few years back going helmet to helmet? I forget the specifics.

Yea there was a player for either the Giants or Cowboys as while ago who was going to spear a punt returner and wound up with serious neck/spinal cord damage, but that's a different situation.

When you hit helmet to helmet, as a defender (I was admittedly guilty of this in HS one or two times) like Chris said, your head/neck braces for the impact, similar to how a head butt may hurt the butter, but the buttee really gets his clock cleaned. But also what happens is that the offensive player's head/neck isn't ready for the hit, so your energy gets transferred through to his head and you keep going, so the jolt isn't that big. In the case with the tackler, he was trying to spear a punt returner in the chest, with his head down. That turned his head downward and put serious pressure on his spinal column, which is why he had to be carted out, and why coaches tell you if you're going to lead with your head, always be looking up, cause you can't do as much damage to your neck that way. But yea, I've given and I've received helmet to helmet hits, and receiving hurts far, far more. The only thing that hurts worse than a hat to hat hit is a knee.

And yea, the difference from getting hit with a shoulder pad to the head vs a helmet is night and day.

Over? Not even. Cribbs was hit low, and turned up field to try and break free. His forward progress was most certainly not stopped. Harrison did something any LB in the game would do, come in and finish the play. He dove at Cribbs and that is when they banged helmets.

If you don't believe me, look it up and you will see that Cribbs said the same thing.....Harrison was coming in to finish the play.

This happens 20-30 times a game when a second defender comes in to make a hit so as to stop forward progress.

I'm less comfortable with the Mo hit. Those hits are all about timing, and on that one, Harrison timed it wrong and was overly aggressive. Two seconds later, or if Mo had not gone down the way he did, it's an awesome play to break up a catch. Sometimes you get what we had with Mo.

Yes, I am a Steeler fan, but I would have defended any other LB on both of those hits.

I guess my point was that if the play wasn't over, why use your head? He could have been just as effective with a wrap-up.

I just think his judgement was questionable if he thinks lowering his head to finish a play is the best possible outcome.

So hey man......you think the loss of Clark is going to cost Indy bad? I think Caldwell, Moore, and Peyton will adjust and be just fine.

-Mike

In the regular season, yeah. Dallas was a nice luxury to have in the postseason. Too fast for a LB to cover and too big for a CB to bring down easily. I honestly think the two true-tightend set would be a great help for the offense. They just don't run it because it would require Clark to leave the play.

It just makes sense to me with a undersized line to use two tightends instead of 3 receiver sets as a base.

That said, Tamme has done well in mop up duty and should grow into a similar role as he is Dallas-esque tightend (more receiver than blocker).

Is it true Sharper is playing for NOLA this weekend?

-Mike

He is on the active roster, but I'm thinking he will be a situational sub this weekend. Let him get his feet wet a bit, get some game time speed without being full time this week.

They're sitting quite a few guys this weekend - Greer, Smith, and Shanle are listed as "questionable" (meaning "...we ain't playin' 'em, but we ain't tellin' you that in advance." - Sean Payton), Porter, Thomas, & Bush are all listed as "out" but all are looking fine right now, they're just giving them the extra week to heal up as much as possible. I think they're making sure they're as close to 100% for next weekend.

You're not going to have as much fun next Sunday night as you think, if they are at 100%....man, I really wish I'd been able to work out that trip! :spit:

;)

To me it's not about the rules on who to decide who should be awarded credit of a TD.

The TD was scored by the offensive squad after a rugby style play, that's all.

Are you now trying to imply it was somehow INTENTIONAL?

That's funny!

:D

Good W for the Cards, the Saints were sleepwalking that day and the Cards took advantage of it. Any team that turns the ball over 5 times is more likely to lose than win.

Don't infer that means the Cards are a "good" team in any way though, because they're not. No post season in AZ this year, that's a prediction I'm very comfortable with.
