NHL 2008

Freshly built? You guys lose track of time over there in Spokane? Safeco opened in 1999 and Qwest in 2002. Both venues featured major money from the team owners as well. I'm not going to get into it any further since this is an NHL thread.

Sue me Mike:D. In my defense I lived in Virginia Beach VA until '01. Qwest was being finished up when I moved here and even though it has been 7 years it's doesn't seem that long.

Those are still modern facilities compared to Key Arena. Modern enough for me to consider them fresh. I can see why the city wouldn't want to dump more money into sports without significant owner backing. Maybe it's a political thing IDK.

Sue me Mike :D....

Naw, I need to make sure we stay buddies so you can help me with my NHL questions. :)

It's a bummer to me that we don't have an NHL team here or in Portland. I sure wish we did. NHL won't come to Seattle until someone steps up and builds their own arena, on their own property.....which is not going to happen. You're right about Key Arena, it's old and outdated. They don't even get top notch concerts in there anymore. The chances of another pro sports team playing there are slim to none. The city is running it into the ground, not sure why.

;)

I made a lengthy edit to this post (from tonight) in case you missed it.

I'd certainly support a Seattle NHL team. Maybe a PDX team more so (I'm a little biased towards P-Town myself). With the exception of the Mariners and the Seahawks Seattle just doesn't seem like a sports town. Perhaps that's just my perception from 250 miles away.

PDX doesn't have a Pro football or baseball team...perhaps they would do well with a hockey team at the Rose Garden. Hard to say with a population of half a million though.

I agree. It is very much a fair weather fan city. That is one of the things that bothers me about the sports fans in this area.

The Mariners have enojyed some success in the 2000's, but their fan base is slowly dwindling. A couple more 90-100 loss seasons and Safeco will look like a ghost town. Right now, they are hanging on to the glory years of the past and really playing off the "family experience" angle to get fans at the games. It won't last much longer.

If Mora gives the Seahawks fans another 5-11 or worse season, there will be plenty of empty seats at Qwest until a winner returns to the field.

Husky Stadium was half full for a few games this past season, and they have long been regarded as the most supported team in this region.

Support for the Sonics dwindled down real fast, and then picked back up a little bit in a last ditch effort to save them from OKC.

It is for reasons like this that I don't think anyone owning an NHL team would bring one here. As unfortunate as it is for us NHL fans, it's for the better. This town can not support the NHL. As we are seeing league wide, not many others can either. :(

You're happy? I'm thrilled. Zetterberg has been pegged as the next Yzerman for years, and now he is. I'm shocked he signed for only a 6 mil cap hit, on the wings board I frequent speculation was 7-7.2. I've got a feeling Stuart and Filppula just may be traded to make things happen for Hossa and Franzen. (that's 7 mill off the books/season). Lidstrom will sign for 2 or 3 mil for 2 years after next season to take another 5 mil/year off. I'm guessing that if Hossa signs for term at 6 mil/year cap hit like Hank did (1.45 off the books from this year) and Franzen signs for $4 mill cap hit (3 mil boost from this year) with their contracts mid loaded (lower first year to help w/the cap for next season) the wings just may be able to get it done and keep hudler as well.

Wow, what happened to my Pens on Wednesday? Five goals in the third to blow out the Rangers. That sure was great to see.

Letang is another young player I like, and he chipped in a couple nice goals.

I empathize Mike with your team not playing well.

The wings did NOT show up on Thursday. The penalty kill redefined suck (I can really only blame Ozzie for one of the goals), and Conklin was schooled for the 4th goal. O'Halloran should NOT be reffing any wings games. The franchise has an involuntarily dilated sphincter after he strapped on his Steve Ott bobblehead and went to town. Some ridiculous calls, particularly the no-goal on the Holmstrom interference. Turco slashed his foot, then Daley backed him into Turco. It was amusing how he refused to speak with Babcock until after the intermission. I've gotta say, it amazes me how levelheaded Babs can be.

That said... Turco made some VERY good saves and deserves credit for getting the 0-fer at the JLA during the regular season off his back. Mid-season slump and injury spat is here. At least some of the kids will get some ice time with Stuart on the IR. And Downey was absolutely worthless in his appearance in the Stars game.

Good to see ya back XYM.

As a Flyers fan I could go on and on about crappy officiating......but I won't.

Veering a little off topic here.....has anyone played EA's NHL 09 on the Xbox 360 yet?

My buddy just picked it up and it is the best hockey game I've played thus far. With the exception of the generic goalie masks.....EA seems to have done a real good job with the mechanics of the game.

I've been mainly a classic control style player (I've had NHL 96 on the comp....99 on the PS1, 02 and 08 on the PS2), but with the amount of stuff you can do with the new "default" setting....I'm pretty inspired to relearn how to play on that setting.

My buddy and I (same guy who comes to watch the games with me) co-op on the same team and try to run plays...get in front of the net for deflections; which is way better in this game then in previous games. We've got a good PK too which in previous versions we've sucked at.

Anyway Sorry for the derail....I'm not much of a gamer but the EA NHL series has always been my favorite and usually the reason I buy a gaming system. It is also where I learned a lot about the rules and nuances of the game.

the stars are finally back on track...
I don't think we'll catch the sharks, but second place in the pacific division is no small task.
:hyper:

Glad to see Avery put on waivers.

As for the Flyers...They had a decent weekend, in a come from behind win @ Boston on Saturday (after loosing to them @ home earlier in the week), and holding off the Thrashers on Sunday.

Carter got 2 goals in trying to catch Ovechkin for the goals scored lead. My not be an easy thing to do as Ovechkin will probably catch fire and stay there down the stretch.

After watching the game this afternoon, I decided to gather up some friends and go see the Chiefs play (local WHL team). Even though they lost 2-1 against Kelowna it was a fun game for sure.

The Wings appear to be very much back on track after that five game hiccup they slaughtered the Oilers 8-3 yesterday and shut out the Pens 3-0 today. And todays game was not as close as the score. While the Pens miss Hosa the really miss those grinders they had. They just seemed to have zero physical presence on the ice. The Pens need some character guys. At this point I don't see any way they get past the Bruins. The Wings were missing three very good players (Homstrom, Stuarte and Franzien) and they still dominated. The wings have won decisivly in all the challenge games. IF they're healthy by the playoffs they still have to be the favorites to win the cup. Conklin has looked great of late, he was a really good pick up. It wouldn't surprise me if he was starting by Cup time, although Osgoods injury (groin) tends to be slower healing, he may still get it together.

VERY true about the Pens lack of character guys. I'm sure Malone from a hockey standpoint is missing the Pens as much as they miss him, though I'm sure he's OK collecting his paycheck.

The wings PK had been downright pathetic over the previous month or so, but it just seems this season that when the Wings actually decide to fully engage the opponent that they lay the smack down. Still, unless they're more consistent, they're ripe to be upset come playoff time, but if they do manage to click on all cylinders, they're definitely the favorites in the West.
