NHL 2008

Sorry Mike, but that was a crappy way to win a game.

I didn't watch the game, I was preoccupied with something else. I have no idea what you are complaining about. Are you just pissed that you dropped one to the cross state rival, or is this trap thing you are talking about a legit complaint? Explain it to me if it is legit, I really have no clue. If you're just whining, I don't want to hear it. :D

The loss would have put us at .500, so I am really happy we won this game. Maybe we can get some momentum from this win as we head into DC tomorrow night so Geno and AO can kiss and make up.

Oh I was just pissed :D. Too Much Pacifico also.

The Neutral Zone trap does suck all the fun out of a hockey game. I can't think of an analogy in any other sport that might help explain it. I'm sure there is a similar Basketball D-scheme.

What it is is they post one forward high and two forwards between the red line and the blue line and two D back hence 1-2-2. Basically you have 5 guys backing into the defensive zone. This cuts down on stretch passes and really clogs up the neutral zone and forces turnovers. It was one of the reasons the league got rid of the two line pass rule, so teams could try to pass thru the trap. You pretty much gotta go through at least 2 guys to get up the boards.

It is an affective defensive scheme but it really pisses people off and not a very entertaining way to play a hockey game. It's also something that I don't think they can do for a long time. I don't know if this holds water, but it seems to me that if you play that way it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt in an open ice hit and your offensive players tire out quicker because they are play a D game rather than using their skill. Also it would seem that you'd frustrate the other team so much that they clear the benches.

After cooling off a little bit; if the Flyers had a decent passing game and didn't give up the puck so often tonight they may have won it. I think they were trying to stick to their game plan and didn't really expect the Pens to come out with the trap.

Of course if it wins you a hockey game why aren't all the teams using this scheme? Desperate times call for desperate measures.

It should be a good momentum boost for the Pens, but I don't think Therien should relay too much on the 1-2-2. Bottom Line; I hate the neutral zone trap and if that's the way the Pens are going to play, then it is only fitting that Sidney Crosby be their captain.

Thanks for the quick rundown. It makes sense. I did some reading on other boards about the game, and no one else mentioned this going on in the game.

It's a win, and we really needed it, so I'll take it. We are pretty much in desperate times in PGH right now for our playoff hopes this season. If this sparks us on to a winning streak, I'm all for it despite the fact that you don't like it. :D

That's what it looks like on paper and that's what counts the most. I'm sure the Pens will start to gain some momentum. It was after a Flyers shellacking in December that the Pens started to skid. Every team goes through tough times. The Flyers went on a ten game losing skid last season and made it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Anything can happen.

Just hoping that the Flyers don't find themselves in the losing column to often.

Sorry to hear about Crosby, hope it's not too bad.

Washington is strong,Their playing good hockey. I love watching Green skate, beautiful.

It's just that time of year. Those injuries just add up. Bruins are getting banged up too. I got to see the game last night! Canadians owned us in the first and we hung in there and won thanks to the spectacular play of Mr Tim Tomas.

Aj

Wings score two goals thirty five seconds apart in the third to beat the Ducks last night. They are starting to roll a bit, I think the Cup hangover is beginning to ware off. I'm a little concerned about their defense on the power play, but other then that if they stay healthy look out.

Crosby gets injured, and we get torched by the Caps. So much for the momentum from the Philly win. :hmm:

I'm pleased to see you're still hanging in there Mike... Pens fans should be appalled at them so far. I certainly am very upset at the Rangers, mainly our big money guys, Drury, Gomez, Redden.... horrible horrible and even more horrible.

Oh well, we got a game coming up, should be enjoyable.

Here in Montreal our complete first line is out ( Koivu , Higgins ,Tanguay) and our top goaler , Price.

Still manage to win a couple here and there.......

Nice game against Boston...... what a team you have !

Flyers finally got back on the winning track last night in a shootout win over the Panthers. The only problem was that the Rangers, Devils, and Pens all won as well. Nittymaki stopped all three Florida shooters, while Gagne scored the only shootout goal. Carter never had to take the third shot for the Flyers.

I'd like to see the Flyers stop taking so many stupid penalties. They are near the top (leading?) the league in PIM per game and it is mostly stupid stuff like too many men on the ice, delay of game (by shooting the puck over the boards), closing the hand on the puck. They had a good start and then shot themselves in the foot in the 2nd last night.

I'm glad they got a rare shootout win; which they are starting to get better at, but I'd prefer they didn't give the other team a point so often. I guess I can give them the benefit of the doubt as that was the third game in four nights. They get a break until Tuesday and then get to whoop up on the Thrashers again. Hopefully anyway. They are unbeaten in like 12 straight against Atlanta.

Other good news; Briere ought to be back for the game on Tuesday. Maybe not so good news as he is a pretty big hit on their salary cap.

I hate to sound like a homer, but I think they call a lot of cheap penalties on the Flyers BECAUSE they're so high in PIM's. Some of the too-many-men penalties are ridiculous, because if you watch, the other teams are doing their changes the exact same way, but are rarely called for it. Against Florida, one of the Flyers got called for holding (I can't remember who it was - maybe Gagne). Even the Florida announcers were saying it was a bad call. You hope that the bad calls even out, but sometimes I wonder...

This has always been the case with the Flyers. For some reason the refs either swallow their whistle or all of a sudden want to make examples out of everyone.

That weak call was on Jones I think. Jones had his free hand on the guys back and they called it holding. You are right the announcers admitted it was a bad call.

Unfortunately we can debate all night long about poor officiating, but to no avail. I try not to make excuses with the ref's poor officiating. I agree that most of the too many men penalties called on the Flyers are weak. I mean if the opposing team shoots the puck in to the offending teams possession and they call too many men....where is the fairness of that. It's not like they are going to go attack the net with 6 guys.

What are you going to do?

Last season I can remember Smith taking about 3 or 4 high sticks to the face with no penalty called. I'd like to believe that the zebra's were looking in the other direction, but I highly doubt it.

What are you going to do?

I think a lot of boils down the the Flyers trying to re-establish the Broad Street Bullies identity and the league isn't having it.

What are you going to do?

Establish a good PK and get 13 (and probably more to come) shorthanded goals.

On another topic.....we can glean some more positive out of Friday's game. Carter continues his to add goals to his league leading total...30!!! I'm really excited about that stat and hope he can keep pace and get that trophy at the end of the year.
