NHL 2008

Well the thinking is that this is basically a threat by ownership to get the county moving on a new arena. They really do have the worst arena in the league.

Adam

And two (The Rags and The Devils) other teams competing for revenue.

EDIT: I'd venture to say that Mellon was the worst in the league, but I've been to neither Nassau nor Mellon. Meh, at least the Pens are getting a new one.

I'd venture to say that Mellon was the worst in the league....

It's a....ummm....rough arena. I've been to quite a few Pens games and other events there over the years. I'm excited for the new arena. I plan on hitting a game in the first season.

Speaking of the Pens and Mellon Arena....we dropped another at home. We only managed one measly goal tonight. :(

The Thrashers actually show signs of life! It's a miracle!

Flyers deflate the Thrashers 3 game winning streak.

I've gotta give it to Atlanta, they didn't give up and almost mounted a comeback.

Knuble shatters it with the go ahead goal midway through the third. Another nail-biter for sure.

EDIT: After a 3 game conditioning stint with the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms; Daniel Briere needs "exploratory" surgery. Although I don't think he will admit it; I have a suspicion that the Flyers' GM, Paul Holmgren, doesn't know what to do with him or how to fit him in with the salary cap. 3rd line center? He isn't a third line center and I'd expect more production out of him with the pay he is getting. In order to have him play they are going to have to make some moves and with the way the team is playing without him...I don't think they want to do that.

I'm sure the Spectrum in Philly isn't any better, just another aging coliseum in a world of state of the art arenas.

So much for a momentum swing after making a stand against Philly.

I didn't watch the Habs versus the Western Conference (All Star) game. Anyone know if Carter Scored? All I can find is video of the post game and I'm not interested in watching it.

I saw it was a 12-11 shootout victory for the East.

Now that that's over with I'll be looking forward to watching some real games.

I find the All Star game boring and a waste of time but if they have it I wish they would allow the sports writers to pick the teams.

Overtime
No Scoring

I don't know who scored in the shootout.

I figured out who scored. Carts wasn't one of them.

Hey Warwick.hoy here's a question for you (being from Spokane and all). Why haven't the NHL managed to get a team in Seattle? It's seems like a no brainer to me. I'm sure the thought has crossed thier mind but for reasons unknown to me Seattle apparently wouldn't support an NHL team. Not that that has stopped the NHL from putting teams in Phoenix(probably toast anyways), Nashville, Florida, and TB. No arena perhaps?

I haven't figured that one out yet. It would seem logical that either Portland or Seattle would have an NHL team. The Sonics left town, for reasons un-beknownst to me, I don't follow the NBA (Mike, help me out on this one). So that leaves Key Arena open.

Vancouver isn't too far from Seattle so that may factor into it. I consider the Canucks to be my hometown team, although I'm a die hard Flyers fan since my whole family is from the rural Philly area (Pottstown) and I spent a lot of time there in my youth.

I don't know how the (WHL) Thunderbirds do attendance and revenue wise. Here in Spokane we have the Chiefs, who won (broke) the Memorial Cup last season. And they do really well (note Spokane is clear on the other side of the state from Seattle and a lot "redder" than Seattle). The Chiefs can draw around 10,000 people on a Friday or Saturday, depending on who they play.

I agree with you. It would seem to make a lot of sense that Seattle would have a hockey team over places like Phoenix. Do you know something I don't know?

EDIT:

It is well documented that Gary Bettman is ruining hockey.

I think Portland would make more sense for a NHL team just because it's further from Vancouver. They have a terrible WHL team, The Winter hawks who have a consistent following of self abusive folks.

The All star game had a nice ending. I would have preferred Kovie burying that short side goal in a game ending OT then getting the MVP.

Aj

Big Week for the B's,,,,Wash on tues and Montreal on Sun!!!!!:bassist::bassist::bassist::bassist:

I don't think having a team in Seattle would take any fans away from the Canucks. I would be surprised if Van had more than a handful of Seattlelites? coming to a game. I think it would make for a nice rivalry over time. It would also make travel easier for teams like the Oilers and Flames if say Phoenix moved there. The miles the western teams have to travel during the season is horrendous compared to the eastern conference. Not to mention the population difference between Portland and the metro area of Seattle/Tacoma.

Besides the NY area has three teams, Pennsylvania has two teams, Anahiem and L.A. are close and Florida?! has two teams.

NHL in Seattle? Not a chance. The only possible palcd it could be played is the Key Arena, and the NHL has already said no that venue. Any remodel of the arena would not make it approved by the NHL either. The city of Seattle has made it clear they are not interested in making any financial commitments to support professional sports in this region. They made that clear with the Sonics.

I don't think there is enough fan support in Seattle for an NHL team. The only hockey team they did have, the WHL Seattle Thunderbirds, moved 20 miles south to Renton since the city of Seattle would not improve any of the suitable facilities in Seattle for them. They had a good following, but that is at WHL ticket prices. With NHL tickets being way more than WHL tickets, that support would go down even more.

As for me....I drive to Vancouver or San Jose for my NHL games. The Vancouver trip is a doozy. When we go to SJ, it is for a couple days.

I can see that with the freshly built Safeco and Qwest Fields.

To be fair Ricky; Columbus is closer to Pittsburgh than Philly; and Pittsburgh and Philly, that is just a great cross state rivalry. Buffalo is almost 400 miles from NYC, but if you factor in the NJ Devils, that's pretty much 3 teams in one market; the Rags and the Isles being the other two. I've heard that the Isles are threatening to leave if they don't get a new arena or some serious upgrades to Nassau Coliseum.

I think it sucks that the Atlantic Division really only covers two states (3 technically), and the rest of the Eastern Conference is so stack on top of each other; but that is just how this country grew. There are a ton of people packed into large cities on the east coast and it starts getting sparser and sparser as you go west. The cities out west are fewer and farther between with the LA area really being the only HUGE population area. Denver is a great market. Utah might be another great market (NBA Jazz). KC might not be too bad either; and that is where the Isles are threatening to move (isn't that where the Sonics went? EDIT: Nope OKC)

I'd think it might be a good Idea to relocate some of these southern US teams back to Canada. I'm not saying get the eff out or anything, but it is a Canadian sport and the Talent is mostly Canadian.

I really don't have any answers for the NHL's problems. In all honesty I think contraction is the best answer and an answer that Bettman refuses to accept. This has been touched on in (other TBer's) earlier posts, but the talent pool is pretty watered down with 30 teams and over 800 players to fill those teams.

I like some of the rule changes (Icing, two line pass rule abolition, crease rule abolition, that trapezoid behind the goaltender etc.), but they aren't done evolving the sport yet.

That said I still love the sport above all others and hope they can figure it out.
