NHL 2013 post season thread!

The BOS/NYR series delivers again. What a game. Did anyone hear the announcers going off on the Rangers for the poor execution during a power play?

Boston guys....was the game on NESN+?

-Mike

Yep during the second period they said something about the Rangers taking turns advancing the puck 1v4 at the blue line. Pierre was absolutely losing his mind. He started screaming about how they were just winging it and not using any kind of power play strategy.

Coincidentally enough, they scored about 2 minutes after all that malarkey was going on.

It's not that the announcers were wrong, but more that I just cannot stand them at all. The Rangers power play sucks, we all know it and it has been that way for years now, even going back to Tom Renney. I didn't need to hear them freaking out on air for 4 minutes straight about it.

At this point, my one hope is that the Rangers can pick up at least one game on home ice to avoid the sweep.

While I am sure this is the case on many teams, I am pretty sure we have at least 2-4 guys with nagging injuries. Hopefully everyone can heal up in the off-season and get a nice training camp in to shore up for next season.

I had a late meeting and could only listen to the radio from the end of the second to nearly the end of the thirds - I caught the 2nd goal on replay. That was a crazy spinning puck - I can't put that much backspin with my lob wedge!

Lundquist almost stole that game and as much as I hope I wrong, I still think he has a shutout left in him and the Rangers will creep back into the series.

Sonic - re: power play problems - that is the nature of the beast with national announcers - they have to play to an audience that is not as familiar with the teams as the die-hards are. However, one thing that the NBC announcers have been harping on that turned out to be true is the fourth line of the Bruins. They were out there for both goals and the forwards had a combined 1 goal and 4 assists. Thornton had 2 assists, and one "chill out" (does anyone know if there is a name for that or does anyone keep stats) when he settled Ranger tough guy Dorsett down.

Re: Datsyuk - even I can tell the guy has talent up the wazoo and I only started to watch hockey again 3 years ago. He's one of those guys that even someone who has never seen a hockey game would identify as one of the most talented on the ice.

I personally think the Rangers are done.

They play with 5 guys down low, which is a lot of pressure, but ultimately, they have nothing left if/when they get to the other zone. Also, the roster of players who can create chances are very few ; Stepan & Nash is all I can think of who can be consistently offensive threats. Brad Richards has had a TERRIBLE series so far. My guess is that he's injured. Meanwhile, the rest of their guys are second-liners who can occasionally contribute, such as Hagelin and Brassard. The rest are grinders such as Dorsett.

Add the fact that Tortorella admitted that he's purposefully shortening his bench instead of rolling 4 lines creates additional pressure for the same lines which are ultimately too tired to do much by the end of a game.

Lundqvist is a fantastic goalie, but even he won't be able to steal a game from the well-rounded Bruins.

LA Kings apologize for Tweet done in bad taste.

I agree. At this point in the season, even as short as it was, I don't think any teams are at 100% health wise.

Very true - the best you can hope for is that your team stays in long enough for some guys to get healthy. Jagr and Marchand are clearly faster/stronger against NY than they were against Toronto.

This is also where team depth is important. The B's would be sunk if the Wee Three D hadn't stepped in and performed so well - (Hamilton, Bartkowski and Krug - hat tip to Keven Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe for the name). We knew what Hamilton could do since he has been here all year, but Bartkowski played 11 games this year and Krug only 1.

True, but Jagr has been a HUGE disappointment for me. A shadow of the athlete he once was. The guy can still skate and has great vision, but I don't think he has the ability to withstand a whole season's worth of punishment and enter the Playoffs by elevating his game another notch.

If he decides to stay, perhaps the slower pace of the next season will be kinder on his body, but he'll unfortunately be another year older then. His days as a major offensive threat are coming close to an end.

Unfortunately, he probably will milk it for as long as he can. He might still have the gambling problem that has plagued him during most of his career.

IMHO, it's actually worse due to the condensed schedule which either aggravated injuries that were accumulated throughout the season or created additional ones.

There's almost no time for anybody to get healthier.

I'm sure the players will be happy when this season officially ends and the pace slows back down to how it usually is.

Yep. The guys on NLHN were talking about the subject just the other day. Guys, especially on the older side, have routines during the season and then to prep for the next season. Having the crazy offseason and uncertainty caused issues for some of those guys. Then, as you mention, there was hardly any time between games this season to get healthier.

In other news, I know you were following the Eric Staal injury. Did you see he is out three months? No surgery, just extended rehab. Hard to believe this will be his 10th year in the league coming up.

Voukon looks shaky tonight, as does the Pens defense. Maybe they'll settle down in the third and make it a comfortable win. If they let the Sens take this game too, the Pens will be in big trouble.

I believe that the Rangers have tuned out Tortarella... If I was a betting man, I'd bet the Rangers will win tomorrow night and then the Bruins will win the series when they go back home for the 5th game....Trust me, I'd LOVE a sweep, but SO hard to win that 4th game. The biggest thing, to me, is that this play-off season for the Bruins is starting to feel like it did when they won The Cup in 2011...
