NHL 2013 regular season thread!

It's hard for me to be too critical of the Richards and Carter deals, given how well Wayne Simmonds and Jake Voracek have played this seasons, and considering that they are both still quite young (24 and 23, respectively, I think), so they should be around for a while.

I'm much more critical of Holmgren for the way he handled the goaltender situation.
All true.

The huge contract Bryzgalov signed was one of the dumbest moves since the DiPietro signing.

And now, they extended Mason's contract after he played (and lost) his first game as a Flyer.

Wish I had money to throw away like that. They might as well hand it to me as I'd make better use of it.

Buyout Bryzgalov. Buyout Briere. Big savings towards the cap for the Flyers. Trade Meszaros + Couturier + a pick if you have to to shore up the D with a young top pairing D. Draft the best D available with your first couple of picks to start stocking the system.

Almost think we're going to see Murray behind the bench next season at this point. Holmgren's not going anywhere.

Wings aren't done yet but it's getting close. :)

As I explained earlier, Brière will most likely be bought out but not Bryz as it would take WAY too much $$$ for that.

As for drafting D-men, it's a good idea in theory, but it's unfortunately not the way to go. You draft the best player available regardless of position and then trade him.

The way the Flyers are playing, I don't think they'll be drafting in the top-5, although there are 3 D-men in the current top-10 rankings for draft prospects, so you never know. Another possibility is trading for a higher pick to get Seth Jones, who's #1 right now.

I think we should keep Coots and just start dressing him as a defenseman.

I missed Sunday's game but it is good to see Soderburg with an assist.

Interesting games coming up for the B's - two with teams out of the playoffs - Philly and Tampa Bay then two with teams fighting to stay in - Washington and Ottawa.

Montreal has an interesting schedule as well with one out of the playoffs - NJ; one fighting to get in - Winnipeg and one that is in - Toronto and the result of that game might determine whether the Habs are a #2 or #4 seed and it might affect whether Toronto will be playing Montreal or someone else in the first round.

Perhaps, but I'm *way* more interested in how Hamilton will be next season (and the season after that).

Every game should be about winning regardless of the circumstances.

That's something the Senators might want to re-read, by the way.

It'd be great to face anybody but the Bruins because it seems that when the Habs get into the Playoffs, that Boston is automatically who they face. Rivalries are interesting to a degree, but it'd be nice to get some variety, once in a while.

I'm personally a lot more interested in the Jets. They're fighting for access to the Playoffs and so far are doing a good job. It's a dynamic group that gives it their all every night. Ladd is a studd and I thought at this stage of his career, he was too injury-prone to be played that often. Glad he proved me wrong.

Go Jets!

Here are some funny examples I compiled of the answers/anecdotes people posted in a thread on a hockey msg board titled "Stupidest thing you have heard while attending an NHL game?"

ENJOY!

1. The Canucks were playing the Sharks, and a guy a couple rows behind us was sitting with his girlfriend, and yells " I hope they bring out the Sedins in the third!" The Sedins were not playing that game.

2. But before Avatar, a girl in front of me and my friends told her boyfriend that "it would be cool if 3D glasses worked in the real world".

3. I mainly just hate people yelling "Shoot" in the neutral or defensive zone. Or when the team doesn't have possession.

4. Some guy at the Leaf game yelling "They're gonna review it and its gonna count!" about 10 times in a two minute span after the Leafs hit the side of the net, and then getting pissed off when they didn't review it (and I mean, it wasn't even close to looking in) and claiming that the league's against the Leafs.

5. Behind me at a Rangers game... "What's offsides? I can't wait to go to my beach home in Vancouver. Oh, when did they score? (referring to a Rangers goal 10 minutes ago which she stood up and cheered for)"

6. At an Avs-Oilers game this year in Edmonton a guy who was belligerently drunk yelled "Sakic sucks" about 3 times in the 3rd period. When the Avs put in an empty netter to make it 3-0 and with about 20 seconds left, in a slightly resigned tone he yells "...Sakic still sucks." It was actually kinda hilarious.

7. A Leafs fan telling me "Buffalo sucks" at a Sabres/Leafs game at the ACC. An arena the Sabres haven't lost at since January 2008. And this was Monday night.

8. At a Devils Rangers game by some drunk fan. "If you stop Kovalev, you stop the Rangers." Kovalev had been on Montreal for a season and a half already.

9. A few years ago an Oiler dumped the puck into the corner from centre and some idiot a couple rows behind yells, "THAT WASN'T EVEN CLOSE!"

10. Along with "what's icing? is that when they bring that big car out on the ice?" (in those exact words)

11. USA chants against canadian teams....when half the home team is canadian

12. "Alfredsson doesn't know how to lead this team. He never fights."

13. "Phil Kessel is the next Alexander Ovechkin."

14. Not an NHL game, but once I was talking with a girl a few months back and told her I was a Colorado fan. "Oh, Colorado," she says, "I know all about them." For a second I dare to believe I've met the perfect woman -- "That's the team Wayne Gretzky plays for, right?"

15. about 10 years ago i had seats behind the one net in pittsburgh in a game against ottawa. some moron kept yelling stuff at alfredsson during the pre game warm ups. i remember this one thing in particular he yelled. the dude said, AND I QUOTE : "Alfredsson! I BET YOU TOOK AN I.Q. TEST AND THE RESULTS CAME BACK NEGATIVE"
I swear to you, Alfredsson hears this, and then gets the attention of two teammates (players that i didnt know) and points out the dude. He then skates by the glass where I was at(along with this moron) and ALFREDSSON goes "YOU PAID 100 BUCKS TO TELL ME THAT?!" and skates away.

16. "Wayne Gretzky is the Pete Rose of hockey, but for some reason the NHL hasn't suspended him for life."

17. We play the Ducks a lot.. Idiot in front of me one game was saying.. "Get the DUCK outta here!" nonstop. I wanted to punch myself in the face to make the pain go away.

18. "Hey Jose, why don't you go back to Mexico!" -An idiot yelling at Jose Theodore [EDIT : For those not aware, José is French-Canadian]

19. Ducks fan: Where's he going in such a hurry? -- pulled goalie racing to the bench.

20. Another Ducks fan: Shoot, shoot, put it in, put it in. Darn. -- yelling at the screen in a bar -- at an instant replay.

21. Girl next to me yelled "What are you doing Miller?! Why are you in the net?! It's a powerplay! You don't need a goalie on the powerplay! You're so stupid Miller!"

22. I've heard alot of dumb things from Ducks fans. At the 2003 Cup Finals I went to a game at the Pond and heard this gem. "Marty Brodeur is such a crappy goalie they should put Clemmenson in. They are giving us the Cup by playing him."-He wasn't joking

23. Some 300 pound guy with a 100 pound beer gut right behind me thought the most clever burn ever was to yell "you're a homo, Nedved" and "Nedved's a homo" at the top of his lungs basically all game long. He also explained to his girlfriend about fifty times about how Petr Nedved likes to tuck his jersey in like Wayne Gretzky because Gretzky was his idol.

24. one game i went to there was a 80 or so year old man who kept on saying : "Where's Bobby Hull?".

25. 1996, Gary Roberts comes back after missing almost 2 full seasons with a broken neck. Its his first game back, playing against the Buffalo Sabres. It is near silent after a roaring applause\standing ovation to honor Roberts' comeback. Then, Matthew Barnaby yells at the top of his lungs... "Roberts.... I'm gonna break your f#&&/# neck !!!!!!!"

26. Some drunk dude at a Rangers game yelling on his way out after the rangers lost "BRING BACK THE AMERICANS! BRING JAGR BACK!"

27. During the Sabres' bandwagon year of 06-07: "Wait, Hasek played for Buffalo?"

28. I once sat beside a guy who was trying to impress his date, and he said he was pretty sure Yashin was still captain of the Sens. This was last season. Thankfully he was an Oilers fan, as evidenced by his Gretzky shirt.

29. "Damnit, Jake told me they had free wifi here, damnit!"

30. At a Wings-Avs game in Detroit, the guy sitting next to me (a Wings fan) was telling me about how he thought Lidstrom was overrated.

31. The Isles had a 3-D intro for one of their games about 10 years ago and they handed out glasses. Half-way through the first, my friend and I look over at our other friend who we really hadn't paid attention to because he's quiet and not a hockey fan. He's STILL wearing the glasses as he's watching the game. "Man, sometimes these things work and sometimes they don't." Later he admitted he had dropped a tab of acid in the parking lot.

32. Some dude in a Rangers jersey yelling, "Go back to Russia, Forsberg" once was another gem.

33. My worst is I heard some guy say, repeatedly, "Hey, Ref! Get the nachos out of your eyes!"

34. I sat an entire game next to a lady that decided she'd kick it up a notch and replace it with "SHOOTERONIE!"

35. I once heard someone say: "Viktor Kozlov will score more points than Mats Sundin."
My head nearly exploded.

36. Overheard a couple of canucks fan debating with each other if taylor hall was our goalie. Lol

37. "Why don't they just pull the goalie the entire game?"

38. I sat in the 2nd row once and the person in front of me left about 3-4 beers on that ledge against the boards as she was sitting down. The play came down the ice and a Bruins player threw a hit against the boards that sent all the beers flying all over this girl and her friends. Her and her friends literally spent the rest of the period talking about how inconsiderate and stupid the players were because they didn't wait for her to take her beers off the ledge before throwing a hit.

39. Jackets-Leafs in Dec 2010 when some drunk idiot a few rows back was throwing Yu-Gi-Oh cards in the air like confetti and yelled "Ken Hitchcock keeps activating my trap cards". I was just like ???

40. when I had Pens season tickets, lady behind me would constantly yell: Lets Go Puck! I am not making that up....

My personal favorite is the Barnaby one. I laughed (no exaggeration whatsoever) until I had tears! LOL!!!

My personal favorite is the Barnaby one. I laughed (no exaggeration whatsoever) until I had tears! LOL!!!

TL;DR,...I'm just gonna assume they were all drunk (including Barnaby).

And yes,...I was joking.

;)

They beat up on Boston to continue the PA domination.

Maybe I'm totally off here, but I don't think Rask is going to lead the Bruins to a SC. He just doesn't seem like that kind of goalie to me. Thomas got this Bruins team a cup, so I hope they enjoy it.

Hey good job guys; way to find you stride at the end of the season. Or is it the beginning of the second half of the season,...it's only mid January right?

What is this the sun? Green grass,...WHAT THE H.E.Double Hockey Sticks is going on around here.

A friend and I spent the afternoon at The Flying Saucer before heading to the game. We met some guys in from Norway on vacation, and they were awesome. They picked a good hockey game to catch, too. The young guys finally got it together, and a pair of them notched NHL firsts tonight. Legwand even picked up number 200 on his career.
