NHL PLayoffs 2009

YES!!! Way to scratch out that win. When Malkin gets hot, there is no one in the league who can slow him down. He was an animal the better part of third period and OT.

Kunitz again out there taking some borderline cheap shots, but the Caps made a few as well. Knocking the net off the posts as Crosby was fixin' to score was BS.

Alright...this is the night Detroit gets some payback for all those Ducks cheapshots in game three. I'm thinking the RW's score at least six tonight and choke the life out of the Ducks the way they did us last year in the Finals.

Allow myself to quote myself.... :D

Thanks to that empty netter from Z, I look half way like a genius this morning. This series is over for the Ducks. Hossa got hot last night, the Ducks are done.

Anyone see the pop on Hossa in the first period behind the Ducks goal? What a cheap shot. I hope Kronwall gets some payback in game five.

I'm a bandwagon Bruin fan and really only come around to hockey in general at playoff time, but I've watched most of the last two games and the Bruins-Canes series is exciting. The teams appear to be pretty evenly matched. The Bruins need to come out and play a little bit harder tonight to tie up the series.

Hiller looked amazingly human last night as the Red Wings concentrated on quality chances. I do think the Wings PP misses Rafelski, but I suspect we're looking at a six game series now. I don't see any adjustments that Aneheims coach can make to overcome the fact that only one line is generating any offense. If he changes to match up with the Fillpala, Hosa, Franzien line, I suspect Zetterberg and Datsuyk start seeing a lot more open ice. The officiating was far better last night. The crew on game three should never work a playoff game again. It still amazes me that the series is almost even in PM. IF the Ducks want to play chippy and cheap that's OK, but CALL IT! How does Pronger have less in PM then Lidstrom?

Phew!! What a game. Finally turned this one around, and the series is now ours to lose. We'll have to see if Gonchar can go for the rest of the series, that makes me nervous.

OK hockey guys...I need some questions answered, please.

1) How is it decided who "won" a faceoff?
2) What is the ref doing when he sometimes makes a guy leave the faceoff for another player?
3) Who decides who is going to be in the faceoff from each team?
4) What is it called when a team lines up their guys on their own blue line and hits the opposing team as they come into their zone on offense? Forechecking?
5) How many different kinds of "checks" are there anyway? What is each one?

Thanks!

I could be here all night.

1). Possession determines the winner of the faceoff....obviously not all draws are won cleanly.....usually commentary is good about describing "scrum draws.

2). The guy is taking too long....cheating too much. All faceoff guys cheat and it is a fine line between getting tossed and not getting tossed. If you get tossed and then your replacement gets tossed it's two minutes delay of game (IIRC)

3). The coach knows who his best FO guys are....those are the men that take the FO. Doesn't necessarily mean that the center man always takes a FO. It could be a winger and then they position themselves in their appropriate spot after the FO. I've seen coaches put a player out just to win the FO and then replace him with the "natural" line mate.

4). Forechecking is when your offense checks the opposing D in their zone....trying to gain possession of the puck. What your describing sounds like a 3-2 trap.

5). Anyone else care to take this one? Okay I've though about it....Checking in general can mean taking the puck carrier out of the play. Poke Check....when you knock the puck of the guys stick....back check....when you hurriedly and usually successfully shift from on offensive position to a defensive position....usually seen when someone defends a breakaway...or an odd man rush....forecheck....see above....body check...when puts the body to the puck carrier.

Thanks bro.

So what I was seeing tonight was the Caps had a line of three guys who floated right on their own blue line and would start popping Pens players as they skated toward them with the puck. Every Pens player who came across the blue line into the Cap's zone would usually get popped.

Pittsburgh does not do this. Probably because we aren't big and physical enough to do it all night long.

Detroit seems like the best at it. They got some tough guys who will lay you out the minute you get close to their blue line.....guys like Kronwall.

Yup...If there is no transition (carry the puck with speed through the neutral zone and over the blueline) then offensive players have to dump the puck....try to get it deep and establish a forecheck.

EDIT: Let me add that with dumping and chasing....if you dump and the goal tender is a good puck handler....he can pretty much end your forecheck with a good pass to an open man or a well timed "hard around". That's one of the things that frustrates me about Flyer Goalie Marty Biron....he is not a good puck handling goalie.

EDIT x2: Defensive schemes are all coaching strategy....the Caps are trying to contain Geno and Cindy as well as Staal (having not seen any games since the Flyers got knocked out). They are trying to take away their speed.

Really don't think it was a dirty hit, unfortunate collision maybe. You can see he was going for a body check and Gonchar tried to get out of the way....

Just youtube'd that hit. I agree with ya Kserg. The Refs called it right though. It's a trip. I think in a lot of those cases things happen so fast that when a player get's position on you....you'll stick your leg out almost as a reaction. It's dangerous but it happens.

I'm surprised the Pens haven't matched up Kunitz with AO. Kunitz could be out there taking Ovechkin's head off.

Stick a fork in them Ducks. :D

Hiller looks amazingly human now. And the Wings are firing on all cylinders. I doubt the series is coming back to the Joe. Hopefully the rest before the next series will get Rafalski healthy. In the meanwhile where did this Erikson kid come from?

Oh yeah!, it was a penalty no doubt, but not a dirty play... He didn't mean to injure Gunchar.
