NHL PLayoffs 2009

The differences, Goaltending, and our fourth line dominated. The Pens looked stronger then last year, although I think the officiating helped them a bit in the shots count. They miss Datsuyk more on the defensive end, I get a little quezy every time Filpilla handles the puck in our zone. That goal by Abdulcator was a thing of beauty. And Osgood stoning Malkin on the breakaway, I wonder when he starts to get in their heads?

This is the main factor IMO. Osgood did a great job. The only mistakes were that mishandled puck that allowed their only goal and fanning on the puck behind the net. Other than that he was spot on.

Yeah, Abdelkader is my boy. He won the NCAA title 2 years ago with the Spartans and now is getting goals in the Stanley Cup Finals. Gotta love a man who stays true to his home state.

Well shucks.....who on the Wings bench paid off Fleury tonight anyway? :D

I feel good despite the loss. Detroit "flipped the switch" tonight, but it looked to me like we also kept hitting and taking away open ice. Both teams had some breakaway chances. I suspected Detroit would crowd Crosby and Malkin all night, they have the best defensemen in the NHL easy. Despite that, they both got free here and there. They both seemed to stand up well to the pounding all night instead of playing scared like I thought they did last year. Staal played well also.

The TV guys kept talking about the "live boards", and I did notice the puck really kicks off the boards more than in other arenas. Obviously Detroit knows this and uses it to their advantage. Several Pen's looked surprised how the puck came off the boards, so they better hurry up and get used to that.

One complaint....when will the refs start calling Detroit for having eight or nine guys on the ice?? I know they had to have at least that many. :D :D :D

Ozzie looked tough, and that made me feel good. I really like him. Helm is a stud. Z seemed on a mission to stop Crosby more than anything else.

Oh hey, I had no idea Bylsma played for Babcock in Anaheim.

I tried to watch the highlights on NHL OTF...what's up with the puck landing on Ozzie's back? The highlight wasn't clear...and Cindy was crying at the press conference that someone put their hand on it. He danced around the fact that he doesn't know the rule...but it is obvious he thinks there should have been a penalty called.

Also what's up between Maltby and Crosby? I heard there were some shenanigans. Crosby is getting better...but he has to learn to not let instigators get under his skin.

EDIT: Looked like Ozzie was the better goalie. The opening goal was a bad one...yeah the RW's held the line...kept possession, but those are the times when they go deep like that the Fluery needs to be huggin the post instead of flopping around in his butterfly.

When the puck landed on Ozzie's back Zetterburg stuck his hand on it but Osgood felt it and was making sure he turned away from the net. I think Zetterburg was just trying to make sure the puck didn't fall off his back.

And Crosby apparently hit Maltby with a stick in the skates after the game. I don't know what was said but we'll see something tomorrow night that will shed some light on the incident.

I don't know the rule. What is it? Zetterburg jumped on Osgood and grabbed the puck with his hand.

Crosby is 21, I agree he has some more maturing to do. Who of us didn't when we were that age though?

Crosby skated by Maltby as he left the ice at the end of the game while Detroit was lining up for the hand shakes with Osgood and brushed Maltby's leg with his stick. Didn't look intentional at all to me. There was a lot of pushing and shoving around both nets all night, so I am sure the two of them tangled up a few times. Just nothing stands out as exceptional to remember between the two.

Anyone see Babcocks interview yesterday where he commented on the VS commercials? He said after watching the commercials a few times, he had to go back and make sure they were the ones who actually won the Cup last year. I got a laugh out of it, so did he I could tell.

I have heard this said a few times in this thread. Who are the critics? The guy won a SC last year again, who is criticizing him?

I understand Hasek's mom busting on him, but who else? :D

-Mike

There are a lot of commentators that have been busting on him saying that he is only good because he plays on Detroit. His response to one critic was "I am top 10 all time in both regular season and playoff wins". This series comes down to goaltending, and it will prove that he deserves to be credited as one of the best in the game. There was talk here on CBC (where the games are being broadcast in Canada) that he should start for the Olympics based on how well he has been playing in the playoffs. He has never even been invited to try out for team Canada before. Honestly, I would take him over Ward and Fleury, both of whom are likely to make the team as the backups to Marty.

Babcock is a character.

I know if you put your hand over the puck in the crease area (blue paint under the goalie) it's a penalty shot (I think...could be delay of game). They've probably never seen the puck land on the goalies back and have a bunch of guys jump on him. They may not even have a rule for that.

EDIT: Crosby said there was "lip service" from Maltby all night, so he "two handed him" in the skates; basically meaning a slash. Both quotes are directly out of Crosby's mouth. I'm just hoping to get a clear replay of both incidents at some point. Also...why would they be shaking hands...they only do that after the series is desided.

That's exactly what i said a few pages back. They're trying so hard to make Crosby the Lebron James of the NHL that they can't even give credit to the team who actually won it.

Coaching too.....Babcock knows what he is doing here. Bylsma was handed a team of superstars three months ago. While Bylsma did a commendable job turning around the Pens season, it also coincided with the return of our best defender, Gonchar.

I didn't know this about Osgood. What a bummer. He is a great goalie, better than Ward for sure.

Hey, I can not stand James. Don't compare him to Crosby. :D

Detroit is getting their fair share of coverage. Everyone and their momma is picking them to win again. On and on we hear about how deep they are and how they can still win without Datsyuk. The pregame player interviews on NBC I saw were mostly Detroit players, with a 20 second clip of Crosby saying how they got whipped last year but they feel better prepared this time around.

One of the VS commercials I remember showed the Pens being down and all bummed out, then how one goal can turn around the series. It also showed Detroit winning in the end. It didn't seem like a "Crosby rules" commercial, but more showing the emotional swings from second to second.

I'm a Flyers fan, so I don't have a dog in this fight. That being said, I felt the referees were clearly giving Pittsburgh the breaks early on. I thought the Pens should have been called for several minors that were never called. Malkin's breakaway resulted from Malkin tripping a Wing, then breaking out of his own zone. Osgood made a great save though, so no harm, no foul.

Later however, when the puck landed on Osgood's back, Zetterburg definitely covered the puck with his hand while in the blue, even though Osgood was starting to roll outward so it wouldn't roll into the net.

Bottom line is that both teams got away with a few. This should be an outstanding series...
