NHL Season 2019-20

NESN does a nice job with their 30 min player profile shows. The most recent was Chris Wagner. His mom said that when he was little (5-6?), he would have her sing the Star Spangled Banner before their basement hockey games. Marchand's mom basically said he was born that way - always on the go, always in his little brother's face. Also, the Bruins 2006 Draft:
Rd 1 (5 overall) Phil Kessel
Rd 2 (50 overall) Milan Lucic
Rd 3 (71 overall) Brad Marchand

I have a vague memory of how good the former Bruins in the front office and on the broadcasts were as I wasn't into hockey as much as I am know, but it is cool to see Neely, Brickley, Pederson, Sweeney playing.

I DID recently watch a replay of Game 7 of the 1975 Cup finals. That's when the Flyers won the 2nd of their back-to-back (and only) Stanley Cups.

A few observations:
  • It is SOOO much better watching today in Hi-Def and better TVs!
  • A real blast-from-the-past how so few of the players wore helmets.
  • And I always liked the fact that the home team wore white jerseys. That gave the fans a chance to see the various colored jerseys of the visiting teams.
  • Reminded me of how all the teams got away with a whole lot of clutching, grabbing, interference, and even late hits.
  • A lot more offsides plays back then because the red line was also a factor. (For instance, if a D-man made an outlet pass from his defensive end to a forward on the other side of the red line, that was offsides because it had passed over two lines {one blue line and the red line}. The red line is no longer a factor in that scenario.)
  • Players really got pasted when going in to touch up on a potential icing. No whistle blowing it dead before the actual touch-up was made. So a lot of hard-earned icing calls.
  • The refs WERE quick to blow the whistle for face-offs on tie-ups along the boards. Today, they almost always say, "Play on!"
  • There were not nearly as many lighting-fast skaters as there are today.

Yeah, I also watched that game recently, and remember that was my first indoctrination into NHL hockey...the '74-75 post season. Been a hockey addict ever since.

The barren boards (no advertising), few teams with names on the back of the jerseys, even fewer helmets being worn, etc, etc, the list goes on. What amazed me was how many of those players I remembered just by sight...with no names on the jerseys there were only a few that I didn't recognize despite being 45 years ago. Considering I can't remember what I had for dinner last night, that was kinda cool.

And I agree with every one of your bullet-points. I always said that whenever I become King of the World, the first thing I'm gonna do is make the NHL change back to home whites. :thumbsup:

I will NOT be watching the Cooper-all years! :D (Honestly, those made better sense than the traditional hockey pants/socks/suspenders but for whatever reason they never caught on.)
EDIT: I'd forgotten about Darryl Sittler playing for the Flyers until I posted this picture. I also don't remember him wearing #9 instead of his regular #27. Must have been before Leach was traded.)

We started watching about the same time. When I got out of the military (1972), I lived in Harrisburg, PA. The cable station played all the Flyers away games, and some of the home games; so I became a Flyers fan (even though I grew up closer to Pittsburgh).

Good points! The "barren boards", and no-name jerseys. And I too noticed that I could still pick out almost all the Flyers just by sight. Clarke, MacLeish, Leach, Schultz, Kelly, Seleski, Dornhoeffer, the Watson brothers, Dupont. Then later came Holmgren, Berube, Tocchet, etc.

I also never liked the long pants, even though they probably WERE more functional and protective. Good post!

Odd thing is, more than a few of us think the '92-'93 team that didn't win the Cup was the most potent Pens squad ever. Just shows you anything can happen in the playoffs. (David friggin' Volek. Sigh. :vomit:)

the only teams that wore those were the Flyers & the Whalers--and I think the Flyers di 2 seasons in them & the Whalers one.
the reason they stopped wearing them is they were dangerous.
If a player fell or got knocked down they had very little friction and would go sliding into the boards, the goalposts or others with more velocity than usual.
So it was a safety issue.
